Metabolic Pathway
Series of chemical reactions that either builds a complex molecule(anabolic pathway) or breaks down a complex molecule ( catobolic pathway)
Catabolic pathway
A metabolic pathway that releases energy by breaking down complex molecules to simple molecules
anobolic molecule
a metabolic pathway that consumes energy to synthesize a complex molecule from simple mollecule
Biogenetics
Overall flow and transformation of energy in organsims. (study of how energy flows through organisms)
Kinetic Energy
Motion of object
Thermal Energy
Kinetic energy associated with random movment of atoms or molecules
Heat
Thermal Energy transferring from one to another called heat
Potential Energy
Objects not presently moving; may still pass energy; energy not called kinetic
chemical energy
Energy available in molecules for release in a chemical reaction ( form of potential energy)
Thermodynamics
Study of how energy moves and changes from one form to another
First Law of thermodynamics
Energy can be transfered and transformed but it cannot be created or destroyed.
Second Law Of thermodynamics
Every energy tranformation/transfer increases the entropy of the universe. (converted into heat) ( Makes universe messy and disordered)
Entropy
measure of moleculer disorder or randomness
spontanous process
Process that occur within an overall input of enery process that is energeticall favorable (happens own its own)
Nonspontanous process
needs a push like water flowing back on hill needs a pump to do so
FREE ENERGY
Useful energy available to do work
gravitational Motion
Objects move spontansouly from higher altitude to lower altitude
Exergoinc Reaction
A chemical reaction where there is a net release of free energy.
endergonic Reaction
Chemical energy where free energy is absorbed
Do Exergonic reactions have negative gibb energy
Exergonic reactions release energy and have a negative ΔG because free energy decrease
Do Endergonic reactions have negative gibb energy
Endergonic reactions require energy and have a positive ΔG because free energy increases. The greater the energy released by an exergonic reaction, the more work it can potentially do.
Is higher-free-energy state more stable relative to other
A lower-free-energy state is more stable relative to the higher-free-energy state.
What is a spontaneous change?
It means something happens naturally without needing a constant supply of energy to make it happen.
During a spontaneous change, what happens to free energy
During a spontaneous change, the system's free energy decreases.
