  • What is biology

The study of life and living things

  • Reductionism

The reduction of complex systems into simpler components

  • Levels of biological organization (10)

    1. Biosphere

    2. Ecosystems

    3. Communities

    4. Population

    5. Organisms

    6. Organs

    7. Tissues

    8. Cells

    9. Organelles

    10. Molecules

  • Emergent properties

A characteristic that a complex system gains when its individual parts interact. The seperate parts cannot process the characteristic/behavior on their own.

  • Taxonomy

Science of naming and classifying organisms into hierarchical groups. Helps understand at risk biodiversity

  • Microbiology

Scientific study of microorganisms and things that are too small to see with the naked eye. Can overlap with genetics.

  • Zoology

Study of animals including their physiology, behaviour, and evolution, etc..

  • Botany

The study of plants and surrounding environments, often overlapping with fields like ecology and genetics

  • Anatomy/morphology

Morphology is the overall form, shape, and external structure of living organisms. Anatomy is a branch of morphology that focuses specifically on internal structures.

  • Physiology

Study of the mechanisms in organisms and cells. Many sub disciplines in research and medicine.

  • Histology (microscopic anatomy)

Study of tissues at the microscopic level, often paired with other specializations
