What 3 things is cell division important for
-organism reproduction
-Organism growth/development
-replacing damaged, worn out cells
Over production/division of cells can lead to what
tumors/ =cancer
too little of cell division can lead to what
degenerative diseases
What is the crease between the two cells in binary fission called
septum
what are two differences between eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells/division
euks have dna in a bound membrane(nucleus) and more gentic material than bacteria/proks
What is the difference between chromatin and chromosomes
chromosomes are highly condesnsed chomatin
What are the double copies of a chromosome called?
sister chomatids
what are sister chomatids held together by
the centromere
what are the sister chomrtids refferred to as once they are separated into their own cells
daughter chromosomes
What are the two mains phases of mitosis division
Interphase and mitotic phases
What are the phases of interphase
G1first Gap, S Phase, G2 Second Gap
what is the difference between centrioles and centrosomes
centrioles make up a centrosome
what is the G1 phases
interval phase between end of mitosis and dna replication, G1 is also the accumulating of all the required material needed to for DNA replication
S phase is what
doubling of chromosomal material
What is the G2 phase
interval between dna rep. and start of mitosis and checking
what are the four phases of mitosis
prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase
what is happenign in prophase
nuclear membrane disappears, chromatin condenses into chromosomes, the centrosomes move to opposite sides , microtubules form
what are the types of microtubules
kinetichore microtubes, attached to the kinetichore of the chromosomes
spindle microtubules, attatched to other spindle
what is happening in metaphase
chromosomes line up in the middle along a metaphase plate
what is happenign in anaphase
the kinetichore microtubules get shorter and pull apart the sister chromatids, the spindle microtubules get longer and elongate the cell
what is happening in telophase
*think opposite of prophase
chromosome decondense and duplicates separate, as cleavage furrow deepsn the cells and cytoplasm pinch apart through cytokinesis. Then two daughter cells are created* Cleavege furrow in animals, vesicles in plant cells by deposit of cell wall material
where are the check points in the cell cyle
there are three,
G1 check, G2 check, M check between meta and anaphase
