  • Anatomical Position

A standard reference point in anatomy where the body is standing upright, facing forward, arms at the sides, and palms facing forward.

  • Axial Region

Pertains to the head, neck, and trunk of the body.

  • Appendicular Region

Pertains to the arms and legs of the body.

  • Anterior Body Regions

Includes regions such as abdominal, mammary, antecubital, axillary, brachial, buccal, carpal, cervical, coxal, cephalic, crural, digital, femoral, frontal, and hallux.

  • Posterior Body Regions

Includes regions such as acromial, calcaneal, cephalic, dorsal, gluteal, lumbar, manus, pedal, pelvic, pubic, pollex, sternal, thoracic, tarsal, scapular, vertebral, and others.

  • Superior vs Inferior

Superior means toward the head or upper part; Inferior means away from the head or lower part of the body.

  • Anterior vs Posterior

Anterior means toward the front of the body; Posterior means toward the back of the body.

  • Dorsal vs Ventral

Dorsal refers to the back side; Ventral refers to the front or belly side.

  • Medial vs Lateral

Medial means toward the midline of the body; Lateral means away from the midline.

  • Cranial vs Caudal

Cranial means toward the head; Caudal means toward the tail or lower part of the body.

  • Proximal vs Distal

Proximal means closer to the point of attachment or origin; Distal means farther from the point of attachment.

  • Superficial vs Deep

Superficial means toward or on the surface of the body; Deep means away from the surface, more internal.

  • Sagittal Section

A vertical plane that divides the body into right and left parts.

  • Parasagittal Section

A sagittal plane offset from the midline, dividing the body into unequal right and left parts.

  • Midsagittal Section

A sagittal plane that divides the body exactly into equal right and left halves.

  • Frontal (Coronal) Section

A vertical plane dividing the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) parts.

  • Transverse (Cross) Section

A horizontal plane dividing the body into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) parts.

  • Dorsal Body Cavity

Includes the cranial cavity (housing the brain) and the spinal cavity (housing the spinal cord).

  • Ventral Body Cavity

Includes the thoracic cavity, abdominal cavity, and pelvic cavity.

  • Abdominopelvic Quadrants

The four quadrants are Right Upper Quadrant (RUQ), Left Upper Quadrant (LUQ), Right Lower Quadrant (RLQ), and Left Lower Quadrant (LLQ).

  • Abdominopelvic Regions

Includes umbilical, epigastric, hypogastric, iliac, lumbar, and hypochondriac regions.
