Anterior means toward the front of the body.
Posterior means toward the back of the body.
Superior means above or higher in position.
Inferior means below or lower in position.
Medial means toward the midline of the body.
Lateral means away from the midline of the body.
Proximal means closer to the point of attachment or origin.
Distal means farther from the point of attachment or origin.
Superficial means toward or on the surface of the body.
Deep means away from the surface, more internal.
Ventral refers to the belly side or front of the body.
Dorsal refers to the back side of the body.
Cranial means toward the head end of the body.
Caudal means toward the tail or lower part of the body.
Ipsilateral means on the same side of the body.
Contralateral means on the opposite side of the body.
Palmar refers to the palm side of the hand.
Plantar refers to the sole of the foot.
Axial relates to the head, neck, and trunk of the body.
Appendicular relates to the limbs and their attachments to the axial skeleton.
