  • I see two different numbers for each element on the Periodic Table of Elements. What is the difference between an element's mass number and its atomic number?


    All atoms of a particular element have the same number of protons. The number of protons is what determines the atomic number. Different atoms of the same element, though, can have different numbers of neutrons, which affects its mass (which is the number of protons added to the number of neutrons).
