  • Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)

    The PNS consists of all neural structures outside the brain and spinal cord, including sensory receptors, peripheral nerves, ganglia, and motor endings.

  • Somatosensory System

    A sensory system serving the body wall and limbs that receives inputs from receptors to provide sensation and perception.

  • Sensation

    Awareness of a stimulus that excites a receptor and generates an action potential to the cortex.

  • Perception

    The interpretation of the meaning of a sensory stimulus by the brain.

  • Mechanoreceptors

    Receptors that respond to touch, pressure, vibration, and stretch.

  • Thermoreceptors

    Receptors sensitive to changes in temperature.

  • Photoreceptors

    Receptors that respond to light energy, such as those in the retina.

  • Chemoreceptors

    Receptors that respond to chemical stimuli like smell, taste, or changes in blood chemistry.

  • Nociceptors

    Receptors sensitive to pain-causing stimuli.

  • Exteroceptors

    Receptors arising outside the body, detecting touch, pressure, pain, and temperature on the skin.

  • Interoceptors

    Receptors arising in internal viscera and blood vessels, detecting chemical changes, tissue stretch, and temperature changes.

  • Proprioceptors

    Receptors in skeletal muscles, tendons, joints, and ligaments that inform the brain of body movements.

  • Nerve

    A cordlike organ of the PNS composed of bundles of peripheral axons; can be cranial or spinal nerves.

  • Ganglia

    Collections of neuron cell bodies located in the PNS.

  • Mixed Nerves

    Nerves containing both sensory and motor fibers, transmitting impulses to and from the CNS.

  • Sensory (Afferent) Nerves

    Nerves that carry impulses only toward the CNS.

  • Motor (Efferent) Nerves

    Nerves that carry impulses only away from the CNS.

  • Spinal Nerves

    31 pairs of mixed nerves arising from the spinal cord, supplying the body except the head and part of the neck.

  • Ventral Roots

    Contain motor (efferent) fibers arising from ventral horn motor neurons that innervate skeletal muscles.

  • Dorsal Roots

    Contain sensory (afferent) fibers arising from sensory neurons in dorsal root ganglia, conducting impulses from peripheral receptors.

  • Rami

    Branches of spinal nerves; dorsal rami supply posterior trunk, ventral rami supply limbs and anterior trunk, and meningeal branch innervates meninges and blood vessels.

  • Nerve Plexus

    Interlacing nerve networks formed by ventral rami in cervical, brachial, lumbar, and sacral regions, allowing multiple spinal nerves to innervate a limb.

  • Reflex Arc

    The neural pathway that enables rapid, involuntary motor responses to stimuli, consisting of receptor, sensory neuron, integration center, motor neuron, and effector.

  • Inborn (Intrinsic) Reflex

    A rapid, involuntary, predictable motor response to a stimulus that maintains posture and controls visceral activities.

  • Learned (Acquired) Reflex

    A reflex resulting from practice or repetition, such as driving skills.

  • Flexor (Withdrawal) Reflex

    An ipsilateral, polysynaptic reflex causing automatic withdrawal of a threatened body part in response to pain.

  • Crossed-Extensor Reflex

    A reflex that occurs with the flexor reflex to maintain balance by extending the contralateral limb while withdrawing the ipsilateral limb.
