  • Inspiratory Capacity (IC)

    The sum of tidal volume (TV) and inspiratory reserve volume (IRV), representing the maximum air inhaled after a normal exhalation.

  • Inspiratory Reserve Volume (IRV)

    The amount of air inhaled during a deep breath beyond the tidal volume.

  • Internal Respiration

    Gas exchange occurring at the level of body tissues between blood and cells.

  • Intra-alveolar Pressure

    Also called intrapulmonary pressure, it is the pressure of air within the alveoli of the lungs.

  • Intrapleural Pressure

    Pressure of the air within the pleural cavity surrounding the lungs.

  • Laryngeal Prominence

    The protrusion formed where the two laminae of the thyroid cartilage join, commonly known as the Adam's apple.

  • Laryngopharynx

    Portion of the pharynx between the oropharynx and the esophagus/trachea; serves as a passageway for both air and food.

  • Laryngotracheal Bud

    Structure formed from the lung bud with a tracheal end and bronchial buds at the distal end, precursor to lower respiratory tract.

  • Larynx

    Cartilaginous organ that produces voice, prevents food from entering the trachea, and regulates airflow to and from the lungs.

  • Lingual Tonsil

    Lymphoid tissue located at the base of the tongue involved in immune defense.

  • Lung

    Organ of the respiratory system responsible for gas exchange between air and blood.

  • Lung Bud

    Median dome formed from the endoderm of the foregut that develops into the lungs.

  • Meatus

    One of three recesses (superior, middle, inferior) in the nasal cavity attached to the conchae, increasing surface area.

  • Naris (plural Nares)

    The external openings of the nostrils.

  • Nasal Bone

    Bone under the root and bridge of the nose, connected to the frontal and maxillary bones.

  • Nasal Septum

    Wall of bone and cartilage that separates the left and right nasal cavities.

  • Nasopharynx

    Upper portion of the pharynx behind the nasal cavity, serving as an airway.

  • Olfactory Pit

    Invaginated ectodermal tissue in the embryonic head that develops into the nasal cavity.

  • Oropharynx

    Middle portion of the pharynx between the nasopharynx and laryngopharynx; passageway for air and food.
