  • Oxyhemoglobin (Hb–O2)

    Oxyhemoglobin is the bound form of hemoglobin and oxygen in the blood.

  • Palatine tonsil

    One of the paired lymphoid tissue structures located anterior to the uvula at the roof of the isthmus of the fauces.

  • Paranasal sinus

    Cavities within the skull connected to the conchae that warm and humidify air, produce mucus, and lighten skull weight; includes frontal, maxillary, sphenoidal, and ethmoidal sinuses.

  • Parietal pleura

    The outermost layer of the pleura that connects to the thoracic wall, mediastinum, and diaphragm.

  • Partial pressure

    The force exerted by each gas in a mixture of gases.

  • Peripheral chemoreceptor

    Specialized receptors in the aortic arch and carotid arteries that detect changes in blood pH, carbon dioxide, or oxygen levels.

  • Pharyngeal tonsil

    Lymphoid tissue structure located in the nasopharynx.

  • Pharynx

    Conducting zone region forming a skeletal muscle tube lined with respiratory epithelium, located between nasal conchae and esophagus/trachea.

  • Philtrum

    Concave surface connecting the apex of the nose to the upper lip on the face.

  • Pleural cavity

    Space between the visceral and parietal pleurae.

  • Pleural fluid

    Lubricant substance between visceral and parietal pleura layers that facilitates breathing movements.

  • Pneumotaxic center

    Neuronal network in the pons that inhibits dorsal respiratory group neurons and controls breathing rate.

  • Pulmonary artery

    Artery arising from the pulmonary trunk carrying deoxygenated blood to the alveoli.

  • Pulmonary plexus

    Network of autonomic nervous system fibers near the lung hilum.

  • Pulmonary surfactant

    Phospholipid and protein substance produced by type II alveolar cells that reduces alveolar surface tension.

  • Pulmonary ventilation

    Exchange of gases between the lungs and the atmosphere; also known as breathing.

  • Quiet breathing (eupnea)

    Breathing mode at rest that does not require conscious thought.

  • Residual volume (RV)

    Amount of air remaining in the lungs after maximum exhalation.

  • Respiratory bronchiole

    Type of bronchiole that leads directly to alveolar sacs.

  • Respiratory cycle

    One complete sequence of inspiration followed by expiration.
