Understand that gametes are sex cells, which include sperm and egg cells in animals.
Recall that gametes are produced through a process called meiosis, which reduces the chromosome number by half.
Recognize that in humans and most organisms, somatic (body) cells are diploid, meaning they contain two copies of each chromosome.
During meiosis, the diploid cells undergo two rounds of division to produce haploid gametes, each containing one copy of each chromosome.
Conclude that a gamete contains one copy of each chromosome, which is essential for maintaining the species' chromosome number upon fertilization.
