  • 7 properties common to all life

Order, reproduction, growth and development, energy processing, regulation, response to the environment, evolutionary adaptation.

  • Relationship between structure and function

Structure and function are correlated; function determines structure and structure determines function.

  • Experiment

A scientific test where usually conditions are controlled and there is one manipulated variable

  • What are the 3 domains of life?

Bacteria + Archaea- simple cells, old, consist of prekaryotics

Eukarya - Protists, Fungi, Plants, animals (multicellular of unicellular) more advanced/complx, consist of eukaryotic.

  • What are the subgroups of domain Eukarya?

Kingdom Protists, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia

  • What are the levels of biological organization from the biosphere to molecules?

(Atoms - smallest unit of matter w/ elemental properties)

    Molecules

    Organelle

    Cells

    Tissue

    Organ

    Organ System

    Organism

    Population

    Community

    Ecosystem

    Biosphere

  • Qualitive vs Quantitive Data

    QUAL

    usually in recorded description form

    Comes from observations

    QUAN

    usually numerical measurements

Can be structured into tables + graphs

    Analyzed w/ statistics

    SIMILARITIES

Both can lead to new hypotheses, predictions, and experiments

    Both are forms of data

  • What is the structure of a controlled experiment?

In a controlled experiment there are 2 groups. The purpose of them is so the scientist’s can see how much change their is between the two so they have something like a base their studies on.

    FACTORS

    Hypotheses

    Independent Variable

    Dependent Variable

    Control Group

    Experimental Group

  • What allowed the reclassification of the red panda by scientists?

The use of molecular evidence where DNA sequences were tested for evolutionary relationships between the red panda, bear, and raccoon family.

  • How are science and technology related?

They are connected because technology is used by scientists on their research or experiments, and science can lead to the creation of new tech.

  • Name the 5 unifying themes of biology.

    1. Evolution is the Core theme of Biology

    2. Life depends on the flow of information

    3. Structure and function are related

    4. Life depends on the transfer and transformation of energy and matter

    5. Life depends on interactions within and between systems

  • Describe the process and products of natural selection.

    PROCESS

Where the species more suitable to that environment will be able to reproduce, pass off traits to offspring, and live more than the species unsuitable for the environment. This cause the unsuitable species to die eventually.

    PRODUCTS

    Evolution

    Adaptation

    Biodiversity

  • How do nutrients flow within an ecosystem?

The sun is the inflow of light energy -> Producers (plants) -> Chemical energy in food -> Consumers (animals) -> Heat outflow

(Leaves take up CO2 from air; roots absorb H2O and minerals from soil.)

(Decomposers like work, fungi, and bacteria return chemicals to the soil)
