Transcriptional Regulator
Protein that modulates gene expression by interacting with DNA and other proteins to activate or repress transcription.
Promoter
DNA sequence near a gene where RNA polymerase and general transcription factors assemble to initiate transcription.
Enhancer
Distant DNA element that, when bound by activators, loops to promoters to boost transcription of specific genes.
Silencer
Regulatory DNA sequence, often far from a gene, where repressors bind to inhibit transcription by looping to the promoter.
Insulator
DNA element that blocks enhancers from activating genes in neighboring chromosomal regions, ensuring regulatory specificity.
Gene Control Region
Entire stretch of DNA containing all regulatory elements, including promoters, enhancers, silencers, and insulators, for a gene.
Coactivator
Protein that assists activators in stimulating transcription, often by interacting with RNA polymerase or modifying chromatin.
Corepressor
Protein that partners with repressors to inhibit transcription, frequently by altering chromatin or blocking activator function.
Mediator
Large protein complex that bridges transcriptional regulators and RNA polymerase, coordinating activation or repression.
Helix-Turn-Helix
DNA binding motif with two alpha helices, one contacting DNA and the other stabilizing the interaction, common in Hox genes.
Zinc Finger
DNA binding motif stabilized by zinc ions, formed by repeats of cysteine and histidine, folding into a finger-like structure.
Leucine Zipper
DNA binding motif with two alpha helices that dimerize, resembling a zipper, enabling DNA interaction.
Helix-Loop-Helix
DNA binding motif with two alpha helices connected by a loop, facilitating DNA binding and dimerization.
Sigma Subunit
Variable component of prokaryotic RNA polymerase that determines promoter recognition and gene specificity.
Operon
Cluster of functionally related genes in prokaryotes transcribed together under control of a single promoter.
