Choice B calcium and bromine, choice C sulfur and fluorine or choice D xenon and chlorine. Let's start by recalling that an ionic bond is defined by the transfer of electrons from an atom which can form a ion to an atom which can form an anion. Recall that ions are typically formed by metals and anions are typically formed by nonmetals ionic bonds can also be described by the transfer of electrons from one molecule to another, which would happen via poly atomic ions consisting of multiple atoms. We can consider another type of bond known as a covalent bond. We recall that a covalent bond is defined by electrons which are shared between nonmetal atoms. So we're going to need to observe the type of atoms in each of our answer. Choices in choice. A we have carbon and oxygen recall that carbon based on its position in group four A on the periodic table is considered a non metal and oxygen located in group six A on our periodic tabless is considered also a nonmetal. So here we have calcium which because it's a metal is going to form the calcium two plus ion since it's in group two A meaning that those two electrons that it loses, which is why it forms a ion are transferred to bromine which gains those electrons. Now, bromine is only going to need one of those two electrons. So Bromine is only going to accept one electron to form a minus one anion. And overall because we have a cat which transfers electrons to an anion being a nonmetal bromine, we therefore have an ionic bond. So let's place a check mark by choice B moving on to choice C, we consider sulfur, which based on its position in group six A, the same group of as oxygen is considered a non metal. And fluorine being in our halogen group group seven A is also considered a non metal. We can roll out choice C because again, it forms a covalent bond where these atoms will share electrons in a bond. Then we have choice D xenon and chlorine recall that xenon is considered a noble gas. So it's located in group eight A and it's a nonmetal. Whereas chlorine recall again is a part of our halogen group in group seven A and is therefore a nonmetal. And so these two atoms will form a covalent bond. And we would rule out choice D for the same reason, we ruled out choice C and choice A. So that means we can confirm that choice B represents elements being calcium and bromine where calcium forms a ion which transfers one electron to the atom bromine forming an anion which gains that electron.
