Monohybrid Cross
Mating between two organisms to analyze inheritance patterns of alleles at a single gene locus.
Allele
A variant form of a gene, represented by different letters or symbols, inherited from each parent.
Punnett Square
A grid tool used to predict possible genotypes and phenotypes of offspring from parental alleles.
Genotype
The genetic makeup of an organism, described by the combination of alleles it possesses.
Phenotype
The observable trait or characteristic resulting from the interaction of an organism's genotype and environment.
Dominant
An allele that masks the effect of another allele and determines the phenotype when present.
Recessive
An allele whose effect is masked by a dominant allele and only expressed when two copies are present.
Heterozygous
A genotype consisting of two different alleles for a specific gene, one dominant and one recessive.
Homozygous
A genotype with two identical alleles for a gene, either both dominant or both recessive.
Gamete
A reproductive cell carrying a single allele for each gene, combining during fertilization to form offspring.
Wild Type
The most common allele or phenotype found in a natural population, often denoted with a plus sign.
Mutant
A variant allele or phenotype differing from the wild type, often resulting in a distinct trait.
Offspring
The resulting individuals produced from the mating of two parent organisms in a genetic cross.
