Condensed Electron Configuration
A shorthand notation for electron arrangements using the symbol of the previous noble gas followed by remaining subshells.
Electron Arrangement
The specific distribution of electrons among atomic orbitals for an element or ion.
Noble Gas
An element from Group 18 used as a reference point in shorthand electron configurations.
Periodic Table
A tabular display organizing elements by atomic number and electron configuration blocks.
s Block
A region on the periodic table where elements have their outermost electrons in an s orbital.
p Block
A section of the periodic table where the highest-energy electrons occupy a p orbital.
d Block
A group of elements whose valence electrons fill d orbitals, often called transition metals.
f Block
A set of elements where electrons fill f orbitals, typically shown separately at the bottom of the table.
Element
A pure substance consisting of atoms with the same number of protons, identified on the periodic table.
Ion
An atom or molecule with a net electric charge due to loss or gain of electrons.
Ground State
The lowest energy arrangement of electrons in an atom, used as a reference for configurations.
Subshell
A set of orbitals within an energy level, designated as s, p, d, or f, where electrons are found.
Atomic Orbital
A region around an atom's nucleus where there is a high probability of finding an electron.
