  • Scientific Method

a process used by scientists to make observations, gather data, form a hypothesis, design experiments, and draw conclusions.

    1. Making Observations

    • make observations about things you see

    • ask questions

    • there may be a Law stated that predicts certain behaviors of nature, but those Laws do not always give an explenation

    1. Gathering Data

    • after making observation, gather more facts based on those observations

    1. Form a Hypothesis

    • hypothesis gives possible explanations for the observations made

    • must be stated in a way where they can be tested in experiments

    1. Experimenting

    • done to test hypothesis and explain relationship between observations and data

    • may prove hypothesis correct or incorrect

    1. Drawing Conclusions

    • once experiments give consistent results, a conclusion is drawn that the hypothesis is correct

    • this comes after many experiments are done
