All security jobs involve keeping people and things safe.

Most of the jobs are in ‘physical security’, including guarding buildings, carrying valuables, installing alarms or transporting prisoners. There are also jobs involved with security systems, making sure that companies are run securely and safely and that staff are well-trained. Not all security jobs involve working outdoors. CCTV operators, security managers and many prison officers work indoors.

Future careers

With increasing crime (and fear of crime), including antisocial behaviour and terrorism, companies take security very seriously. Security staff are needed in more and more places, such as schools and at outdoor events. In addition, as alarm systems become complex, trained staff will be needed to install and maintain them.

Things to consider

Things you may need to know:

  • For some jobs you may need a driving licence.
  • For some jobs you need to hold a Security Industry Authority (SIA) licence and be over 18.
  • Some people move into security jobs after they have worked in the police or the armed forces.
