  • The first Pearson BTEC International centre opens in Japan to teach Level 3 Sport

    December 13, 2021

Sendai Ikuei Gakuen, the first school to gain Pearson BTEC centre approval in Japan, is now taking registrations for the Pearson BTEC International Level 3 in Sport programmes, jointly created by Pearson and Liverpool FC.

In obtaining this qualification, Japanese learners will acquire world class knowledge and skills founded on Liverpool Football Club’s premiership sporting methodology and Pearson BTEC's globally recognised learning programmes, which are delivered in over 50 countries worldwide.

    What is a BTEC?

BTEC stands for the Business and Technology Education Council (BTEC), a programme of study which is benchmarked to international standards, to enable learners to gain qualifications in specialist subjects at secondary and tertiary level. They are designed in collaboration with employers to provide relevant work-related learning, enabling learners to progress towards employment or into further study.

What will Sendai Ikuei High School offer?Sendai Ikuei Gakuen High School and partner Shuko Junior High School are offering the Pearson BTEC International Level 3 qualification alongside the IB (International Baccalaureate) study programmes, Middle Year and Diploma Programmes (MYP and DP), with the aim of nurturing learners who can understand and deal with the complexities of the world.

They will be focusing on the field of sports and have decided to introduce the BTEC International pathway, ‘Sports Business and Management’ into their classes. The aim is for learners to acquire specialized knowledge and skills in sports and its management, as well as to cultivate thinking and practical skills in the classroom which will benefit them as they progress into higher education and the workforce.

    When will learning begin?

The qualification will be launched at Sendai Ikuei Gakuen in Japan, in April 2022 and more than 20 learners have already expressed their interest.

The 2022 academic year will introduce the pilot course to around 20 learners, which will consist of about 180 hours of units per year. The school will introduce the BTEC International curriculum as a school-set subject and offer 5 to 6 hours of classes per week.

The 2023 school year will be a transition period before the full-scale introduction ofthe programme, which is expected to take place in 2024.
