Prepare your learners for the future of work
This report rings alarm bells for both the EFL teacher and learner. For the former, it’s a stark and timely reminder that teaching English per se is no longer enough to meet the needs of our learners who aspire to become fully rounded global citizens. Our learners, in turn, are reminded that English is a tool, not an aim in itself — a tool for collaboration, community building, critical thinking, and much more: skills that are so desperately sought after on the global job market. Soft skills are deservedly foregrounded, as they have ceased to be a nice-to-have EFL add-on and have become an integral part of what EFL teaching and learning ultimately is.
