  • single layer of cell

    Simple

  • Multiple-layers of cell

    Stratified cells

  • flattened looking cell

    Squamous cells

  • cube like cell

    Cuboidal cell

  • column looking cell ( tall )

    columnar cell

    • Single layer of flat cells

    • Location - usually forms membranes ( lungs, kidneys, heart, blood vessels)

      • Lines body cavities

      • Lines lungs and capillaries

    • Functions in diffusion, filtration, or secretion in membranes

    Simple squamous

    • Single layer of cube like cells

    • location: kidney tubules, ovary surface, and secretory proportion of small glands

    • Functions in secretion and absorption; ciliated types propel mucus or reproductive cells

    • Common in glands and their ducts

    Simpple cuboidal

    • Single layer of tall cells

    • Often includes mucus-producing goblet cells

Location: Somache and digestive track (intestines)

    • Some of them have microvilli to increase surface area for absorption.

    • Functions in secretion and absorption; ciliated types propel mucus or reproductive cells

    Simple columnar

    • Single layer, but some cells are shorter than others

    • Often looks like a double layer of cells but all cells rest on the basement membrane

    • Location: respiratory tract (trachia) non ciliated location is the male urethra

    • Funchtion: secretion, particularly of mucus; propulsion of mucus by ciliary action

    psudostratified columnar Epithilium

    • Multiple layers of cells

    • Cells at the apical surface are flattened

    • Functions as a protective covering where friction is common

    • Location: Lining of skin, mouth, and esophagus

    Stratified squamous

    • two layers of cuboidal cells

    • functions in protection

    • Rare to find in the human body

    • Found mainly in ducts of large glands

    Stratified cuboidal

    • surface cells are taller, cells underneath vary in size and shape

    • functions in protection

    • Rare to find in the human body

    • Found mainly in ducts of large glands

    Stratified Columnar

    • Composed of modified stratified squamous epithelium

    • Shape of cells depends upon the amount of stretching

    • Functions: in stretching and the ability to return to normal shape

    • Lines the ureter, bladder, and parts of the urethra

    Transitional Epithelia

  • Extra

    • One or more cells responsible for secreting a particular product

    • Secretions contain protein molecules in an aqueous (water-based) fluid

    Glands

  • Extra

    • Ductless since secretions diffuse into blood vessels

    • All secretions are hormones

    Endocrine

  • Extra

    • Secretions empty through ducts to the epithelial surface

    • Include sweat and oil glands

    Exocrine
