Major Human Organ Systems

The human body is composed of several organ systems, each with distinct functions and associated organs. Understanding which organs belong to which system is fundamental in anatomy and physiology.

  • Integumentary System: Includes skin, hair, nails; protects the body and regulates temperature.

  • Skeletal System: Composed of bones and joints; provides structure and support.

  • Muscular System: Consists of skeletal muscles; enables movement and maintains posture.

Body Planes and Cavities

Planes of the Body

Body planes are imaginary lines used to divide the body into sections for anatomical study.

  • Frontal (Coronal) Plane: Divides the body into anterior and posterior parts.

  • Sagittal Plane: Divides the body into left and right parts.

  • Transverse Plane: Divides the body into superior and inferior parts.

Abdominal Cavities and Regions

The abdomen is divided into quadrants and regions to help locate organs and describe pain or injury.

  • Quadrants: Right Upper, Left Upper, Right Lower, Left Lower.

Tissues of the Human Body

Types of Epithelial Tissue

Epithelial tissues cover surfaces and line cavities. They are classified by cell shape and layers.

  • Simple Squamous Epithelium: Single layer of flat cells; found in lungs and blood vessels.

Muscle Tissue Types

  • Ball-and-Socket Joint: Allows movement in multiple planes (e.g., shoulder, hip).
