Course Overview
Introduction to BIO139: Human Anatomy and Physiology II with Lab
BIO139 is the second semester of a comprehensive study of human anatomy and physiology, focusing on the interrelationships of organ systems. The course includes both lecture and laboratory components, delivered online, and covers the endocrine, reproductive, cardiovascular, lymphatic, digestive, respiratory, and urinary systems.
Credits: 3 (lecture) + 1 (lab)
Prerequisite: BIO137 (recommended grade C or higher)
Textbook: Marieb’s Human Anatomy & Physiology (12th edition, Pearson Publishing)
Lab Manual: BIO139 Online Lab Manual (provided in Blackboard)
Course Learning Outcomes
Key Competencies Developed
Explain basic inorganic and organic chemistry principles as they apply to physiological processes.
Describe basic cell structure and physiology.
Describe the structure and function of major tissue types.
Recognize the complementarity of structure and function.
Describe the basic metabolic processes of organ systems.
Explain the interrelationships between organ systems and physiological processes.
Explain the major homeostatic mechanisms in each body system in response to internal and external environmental changes.
Explain the physiological and anatomical mechanisms of common dysfunctions.
Course Structure and Topics
Lecture Modules
The course is divided into five main lecture modules, each focusing on specific organ systems and physiological processes:
Module 1: Endocrine and Reproductive System

Module 3: Circulatory System: Cardiovascular Physiology
Module 4: Lymphatic, Immune, and Respiratory System
Module 5: Digestive and Urinary Systems; Acid-Base Balance
Laboratory Modules
The laboratory component is organized into five lab modules, each containing two lab exercises:
Lab Exercises 11-12
Lab Exercises 13-14
Lab Exercises 15-16
Lab Exercises 17-18
