Overview
Body membranes are thin layers of tissue that cover surfaces, line body cavities, and surround organs. They play essential roles in protection, secretion, and compartmentalization within the body. The three major types of body membranes are cutaneous, mucous, and serous membranes.
Cutaneous Membrane
Structure and Function
Definition: The cutaneous membrane is commonly known as the skin.
Structure:
Epidermis: Composed of keratinized stratified squamous epithelium.
Dermis: Consists of areolar and dense irregular connective tissue.
Function: Protects underlying tissues, prevents water loss, and provides a barrier to pathogens.
Example: The skin covering the entire external surface of the body.
Mucous Membrane
Structure and Function
Definition: Mucous membranes (mucosae) line body cavities that are open to the exterior environment.
Structure:
Epithelial Layer: Varies by location; may be non-keratinized stratified squamous, simple columnar, or pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium.
Lamina Propria: Underlying layer of loose areolar connective tissue.
Function: Secretes mucus or fluids to keep surfaces moist, traps pathogens and particles, and facilitates absorption and secretion.

Serous Membrane (Serosa)
Structure and Function
Definition: Serous membranes line body cavities that are not open to the exterior and cover the organs within these cavities.
Structure:
Mesothelium: A layer of simple squamous epithelium.
Underlying Connective Tissue: Thin layer of areolar connective tissue.
Function: Secretes serous fluid to reduce friction between moving organs.
Types:
Parietal layer: Lines the cavity wall.
Visceral layer: Covers the organs within the cavity.
Major Serous Membranes:
Pleura: Surrounds the lungs (parietal pleura lines the cavity, visceral pleura covers the lungs).
Pericardium: Surrounds the heart (parietal pericardium lines the cavity, visceral pericardium covers the heart).
Peritoneum: Lines the abdominopelvic cavity and covers abdominal organs.
