Chapter 9: The Endocrine System

System Overview

The endocrine system is a network of glands that secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream to regulate body functions. It is essential for maintaining homeostasis and coordinating growth, metabolism, and reproduction.

  • Hormones: Chemical messengers that travel through the blood to target organs.

  • Main endocrine glands: Pineal gland, Hypothalamus, Pituitary gland, Thyroid gland, Thymus, Pancreas, Adrenal glands, Kidneys, Testes (male), Ovaries (female).

Thyroid Gland

Location & Structure

The thyroid gland is located at the base of the throat, consisting of two lobes connected by an isthmus.

Hormones

  • Thyroid Hormone (TH): Main metabolic hormone.

    • Thyroxine (T4): Secreted by thyroid follicles.

    • Triiodothyronine (T3): Formed from T4 at target tissues.

    • Effects: Increases metabolism, oxygen use, and energy levels.

  • Calcitonin: Lowers blood calcium levels by depositing Ca2+ in bone. Antagonistic to parathyroid hormone (PTH).

Parathyroid Glands

Location & Function

Located posterior to the thyroid, the parathyroid glands secrete parathyroid hormone (PTH), which increases blood calcium levels.

  • PTH increases Ca2+ by:

    • Stimulating osteoclasts to remove Ca2+ from bone

    • Increasing Ca2+ absorption in kidneys & intestines

    • Antagonistic to calcitonin

    • Maintains calcium homeostasis

Adrenal Glands

Structure

  • Adrenal Cortex (outer): Glandular tissue

  • Adrenal Medulla (inner): Neural tissue

Adrenal Cortex Hormones

  • Mineralocorticoids (Aldosterone): Regulate Na+, K+, and water balance; control blood volume & pressure.

    • Target: Kidneys

    • Stimulated by: Renin & Angiotensin II

    • Inhibited by: Atrial Natriuretic Peptide (ANP)

  • Glucocorticoids (Cortisol, Cortisone): Promote normal metabolism, help resist long-term stress, released in response to ACTH from the pituitary.

  • Sex Hormones: Mostly androgens (male); some estrogens (female), produced in the inner layer.

Adrenal Medulla

  • Catecholamines:

    • Epinephrine (Adrenaline)

    • Norepinephrine (Noradrenaline)

  • Fight-or-Flight Effects:

    • Increases heart rate & blood pressure

    • Dilates bronchioles

    • Raises blood glucose

    • Increases alertness

    • Decreases digestion & kidney activity

Pancreatic Islets (Islets of Langerhans)

Location & Function

The pancreas has both endocrine and exocrine functions. The islets secrete hormones that regulate blood glucose.

Pineal Gland

Location & Function

Located near the third ventricle of the brain, the pineal gland secretes melatonin, which controls sleep-wake cycles and may affect fertility timing.

Thymus

Location & Function

Located behind the sternum, largest in infants and children. Secretes thymosin, which matures T-lymphocytes (white blood cells) and is essential for immune system development.

Gonads

Ovaries

  • Produce eggs, estrogens, and progesterone

  • Estrogens:

    • Develop female traits (breasts, body shape)

    • Mature reproductive organs

    • Regulate menstrual cycle with progesterone

  • Progesterone:

    • Works with estrogen to control menstrual cycle

    • Supports embryo implantation

    • Prepares breasts for lactation

Testes

  • Produce sperm and testosterone

  • Testosterone:

    • Creates male secondary traits

    • Matures reproductive organs

    • Required for sperm production

Placenta

Function

The placenta is a temporary endocrine organ during pregnancy. It produces:

  • Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG)

  • Estrogen & Progesterone: Maintains pregnancy and assists in childbirth preparation

Other Hormone-Producing Organs

  • Small Intestine & Stomach: Digestive hormones

  • Kidneys: Erythropoietin stimulates RBC production

  • Heart: Atrial Natriuretic Peptide (ANP) lowers blood pressure

  • Stomach: Gastrin

  • Small Intestine: Secretin

Developmental Aspects

Most glands work efficiently until old age. With aging:

  • Menopause: Decreased ovarian function and estrogen

  • Growth Hormone: Declines with age

  • Overall endocrine output: Decreases over time
