Overview of Spongy Bone Structure

Spongy bone, also known as cancellous bone, is a type of osseous tissue characterized by a porous, lattice-like architecture. It is commonly found at the ends of long bones and within the interior of flat bones, providing structural support and housing bone marrow.

  • Lamellae: Layers of bone matrix are organized into trabeculae, which form a branching network of bony tissue. This arrangement increases the surface area and reduces bone weight.

  • Osteocytes: Mature bone cells are located within small spaces called lacunae embedded in the trabeculae.

  • Canaliculi: Tiny channels branch out from each lacuna, allowing osteocytes to communicate and exchange nutrients with blood vessels.

  • Marrow Cavities: Numerous cavities within the trabecular network contain red bone marrow and small blood vessels, which are essential for hematopoiesis (blood cell formation).

  • Endosteum: The internal surface of spongy bone is lined by a thin membrane called the endosteum, which contains osteoprogenitor cells and is involved in bone growth and repair.

  • Endosteum: A cellular membrane lining the internal surfaces of the bone, important for bone remodeling.

  • Spongy bone is found in the epiphyses (ends) of long bones, such as the femur, where it absorbs shock and reduces bone mass.
