Language of Anatomy
Anatomical Position
The anatomical position is the standard reference posture for describing locations and directions on the human body. In this position, the body stands upright, facing forward, with feet parallel and arms at the sides, palms facing forward.
Purpose: Provides a consistent frame of reference for anatomical terminology.
Application: All directional terms assume the body is in this position, regardless of its actual posture.
Surface Anatomy – Body Regions
Surface anatomy divides the body into regions to facilitate description and study. Each region has specific names:
Cephalic (Head): Frontal (forehead), Orbital (eye), Nasal (nose), Buccal (cheek), Oral (mouth), Mental (chin), Occipital (back of head)
Cervical: Neck
Thoracic: Sternal (breastbone), Axillary (armpit), Mammary (breast)
Abdominal: Umbilical (navel)
Pelvic: Pubic (genital region)
Upper Limb: Acromial (shoulder), Brachial (arm), Carpal (wrist), Manus (hand), Palmar (palm), Pollex (thumb)
Lower Limb: Coxal (hip), Femoral (thigh), Patellar (kneecap), Popliteal (back of knee), Pedal (foot), Tarsal (ankle), Plantar (sole), Hallux (big toe)
Dorsal (Back): Scapular (shoulder blade), Vertebral (spinal column), Lumbar (lower back), Sacral (between hips)
Example: The axillary region refers to the armpit area.
Body Orientation and Position
Directional terms describe the location of structures relative to other structures or locations in the body.
Superior / Inferior: Above / Below
Cranial / Caudal: Toward the head / Toward the tail (feet)
Anterior / Posterior: Front / Back
Ventral / Dorsal: Belly side / Back side
Medial / Lateral: Toward the midline / Away from the midline
Proximal / Distal: Closer to the point of attachment / Farther from the point of attachment (used for limbs)
Superficial / Deep: Toward or at the body surface / Away from the body surface
Example: The heart is medial to the lungs.
Body Planes
Body planes are imaginary lines used to divide the body for anatomical study.
Sagittal Plane: Divides the body into right and left parts.
Midsagittal (Median) Plane: Divides the body into equal right and left halves.
Frontal (Coronal) Plane: Divides the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) parts.
Transverse (Horizontal) Plane: Divides the body into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) parts.
Example: A CT scan is often taken in the transverse plane.
Body Cavities
The body contains internal cavities that house and protect organs.
Dorsal Cavity:
Cranial Cavity: Contains the brain
Vertebral (Spinal) Cavity: Contains the spinal cord

The Microscope
Parts of the Microscope
Microscopes are essential tools for studying cells and tissues. Understanding their parts is crucial for proper use.
Ocular Lenses (Eyepieces): The lenses you look through, usually 10x magnification.
Objective Lenses: Lenses of varying magnification (e.g., 4x, 10x, 40x, 100x).
Rotating Nosepiece: Holds and rotates the objective lenses.
Base: The bottom support of the microscope.
Arm: Supports the body tube and connects it to the base.
Substage Light: Provides illumination.
Light Control: Adjusts the intensity of the light.
Stage: Platform where the slide is placed.
Mechanical Stage: Holds and moves the slide.
Stage Control Knobs: Move the slide on the stage.
Condenser: Focuses light on the specimen.
Condenser Knob: Adjusts the height of the condenser.
Iris Diaphragm: Regulates the amount of light reaching the specimen.
Coarse Focus Knob: Brings the specimen into general focus.
Fine Focus Knob: Sharpens the focus.
Example: Use the coarse focus knob first, then the fine focus knob for clarity.
Magnification
Magnification is the process of enlarging the appearance of an object. The total magnification of a microscope is calculated by multiplying the magnification of the ocular lens by that of the objective lens.
