Introduction to Joints
Joints, also known as articulations, are the locations where two or more rigid elements of the skeleton meet. The Greek root arthro means joint. Joints are essential for providing the skeleton with mobility and flexibility, while also enabling resistance to crushing, tearing, and other mechanical forces.
Function: Allow movement and provide mechanical support.
Structure: Varies depending on the type of joint and the materials connecting the bones.
Classification of Joints
Functional Classification
Joints can be classified by the amount of movement they allow:
Synarthroses: Immovable joints; commonly found in the axial skeleton (e.g., skull sutures).
Amphiarthroses: Slightly movable joints; also common in the axial skeleton (e.g., intervertebral discs).
Diarthroses: Freely movable joints; primarily found in the appendicular skeleton (e.g., shoulder, knee).

Structural classification is based on the material binding the bones and the presence or absence of a joint cavity:

General Features
In fibrous joints, bones are connected by fibrous connective tissue. These joints do not have a joint cavity and are mostly immovable or only slightly movable.

Found only between bones of the skull.
Bones are tightly bound by a minimal amount of fibrous tissue.
Allow for bone growth during childhood; later ossify to become synostoses (closed sutures).
Syndesmoses
Bones are connected exclusively by ligaments.
Movement depends on the length of the connecting fibers.
Examples:
Tibiofibular joint: Immovable (synarthrosis).
Interosseous membrane between radius and ulna: Freely movable (diarthrosis).
Gomphoses
Specialized joints where a tooth fits into its socket.
The connecting ligament is the periodontal ligament.
Cartilaginous Joints
General Features
In cartilaginous joints, bones are united by cartilage and lack a joint cavity. There are two main types:

Bones are united by hyaline cartilage.
Examples:
Epiphyseal plates in growing long bones.
Joint between the first rib and the manubrium of the sternum.
Symphyses
Bones are united by fibrocartilage, which resists tension and compression.
These joints are slightly movable, providing both strength and flexibility.

Pubic symphysis
Hyaline cartilage is also present as articular cartilage on the bone surfaces.
Synovial Joints
General Features
Synovial joints are the most movable type of joint and are all classified as diarthroses. Each synovial joint contains a fluid-filled joint cavity.
Key Structural Components
Articular cartilage: Hyaline cartilage covers the ends of opposing bones, absorbing compression and reducing friction.
Joint (articular) cavity: A unique, potential space that holds a small amount of synovial fluid.
Articular capsule: Encloses the joint cavity with two layers:
Fibrous layer: Dense irregular connective tissue that strengthens the joint.
Synovial membrane: Loose connective tissue that lines the capsule and covers internal joint surfaces; produces synovial fluid.
Synovial fluid: A viscous, egg-white-like fluid that lubricates the joint. It is a filtrate of blood, containing glycoproteins secreted by fibroblasts. Weeping lubrication describes how pressure on the joint squeezes synovial fluid in and out of the articular cartilage.
Reinforcing ligaments: Strengthen and stabilize the joint. They may be part of the capsule (intracapsular) or outside it (extracapsular).
Sensory nerves: Detect pain and monitor the degree of capsule stretch.
Blood supply: Rich capillary beds supply the synovial membrane and produce the basis of synovial fluid. Multiple major nerves and blood vessels serve the joint.
Articular Discs (Menisci)
Some synovial joints contain an articular disc (also called a meniscus).
These discs are found in joints where the articulating bones have different shapes, such as the temporomandibular joint and the knee joint.
They help improve the fit between bone ends, stabilize the joint, and reduce wear and tear.

The knee is a synovial joint containing articular cartilage, a joint cavity, an articular capsule, synovial fluid, reinforcing ligaments, and articular discs (menisci).
It is freely movable and stabilized by both intracapsular and extracapsular ligaments.
