Lymphatic System
Overview
The lymphatic system is a crucial component of the human body's immune and circulatory systems. It consists of a network of vessels, nodes, and organs that help maintain fluid balance, defend against pathogens, and facilitate the movement of immune cells.
Functions of the Lymphatic System
Transport and House Immune Cells: The lymphatic system transports and houses lymphocytes and other immune cells, playing a vital role in immune surveillance and response.
Return Excess Fluid: It returns excess interstitial fluid from body tissues to the bloodstream, helping to maintain blood volume and pressure.
Characteristics of Lymph
Lymph is the fluid transported by the lymphatic system. It has several key characteristics:
Water: The primary component of lymph.
Dissolved Solutes: Includes electrolytes and nutrients.
Protein: Contains proteins that have leaked from the blood capillaries.
Cellular Debris, Pathogens, or Cancer Cells: Lymph may contain cell fragments, microorganisms, or malignant cells picked up from tissues.
Lymphatic Capillaries
Structure and Function
Lymphatic capillaries are the smallest vessels of the lymphatic system. They are responsible for absorbing interstitial fluid from tissues. Fluid enters these capillaries due to a pressure gradient created by the accumulation of fluid, which pushes on the overlapping endothelial cells that form the capillary walls.
Small, Closed-Ended Vessels that absorb interstitial fluid: These capillaries begin as blind-ended tubes in the tissue spaces. They collect fluid that leaks out of blood capillaries, preventing tissue swelling (edema).
Slightly Larger than Blood Capillaries: Their size and structure allow them to take up larger molecules, such as proteins and cell debris.
Flow Pathway (lymph path) : Lymphatic capillaries → lymphatic vessels → lymphatic trunks → lymphatic ducts
Lymphatic Vessels
Structure and Location
Lymphatic vessels are larger channels that transport lymph from the capillaries toward the heart.
Located Adjacent to Arteries and Veins: These vessels often run parallel to blood vessels.
Have Valves: Valves prevent the backflow of lymph, ensuring one-way movement toward the thoracic cavity.
Lymphatic Trunks and Ducts
Major Lymphatic Trunks
Jugular Trunks: Drain lymph from the head and neck.
Subclavian Trunks: Drain lymph from the upper limbs and superficial thoracic wall.
Broncho mediastinal Trunks: Drain lymph from the thoracic organs.
Intestinal Trunk: Drains lymph from the abdominal organs.
Lumbar Trunks: Drain lymph from the lower limbs and pelvic organs.
Major Lymphatic Ducts
Right Lymphatic Duct: Drains lymph from the right upper limb, right side of the thorax, and right halves of the head and neck.
Thoracic Duct: Drains lymph from the rest of the body and empties into the left subclavian vein.
Flow of Lymph Fluid
Lymph flows from the tissues through lymphatic capillaries, vessels, trunks, and ducts, eventually returning to the bloodstream. The flow is aided by skeletal muscle contraction, respiratory movements, and the presence of valves.
The Two major types of lymphocytes
T-lymphocytes: Provides cell mediated immunity. cell to cell aka what makes you sick coming into contact with specific cells. effective against antigens within cells. requires antigen resenting cell. acts on intracellular microbes. delayed/ hypersensitivity.

Key Lymphatic Organs and Tissues
Tonsils: clusters of lymphoid cells. Located in the back of the throat. Surveils any inhaled or ingested substance.
Pharyngeal Tonsil aka the adenoids: located posterior wall of the nasal pharynx.
Palatine Tonsil: located in the oral cavity
Lingual Tonsil: located around the posterior 1/3rd of our tongue
Function: Provide immune surveillance of inhaled and ingested substances.
Thymus Gland
Location: Superior mediastinum, behind the sternum.
Function: Site of T-lymphocyte maturation.
Lymph Nodes
Clusters: Found in axillary (breast axilla and upper limb area), inguinal (lower limbs and pelvis), and cervical (head and neck) regions.
Function: Filter lymph and house lymphocytes that respond to pathogens. One way in (afferent lymphatic vessel) and one way out (efferent lymphatic vessel).
Spleen
Function: Filters blood, removes old red blood cells, and participates in immune responses.
Located: the left upper quadrant of the abdominal cavity. Divided into two regions: the white pulp and the red pulp.
The white pulp: contains lymphatic cells such as T-lymphocytes, B-lymphocytes and macrophages. helps monitor blood for any pathogenic materials, bacteria, antigens or anything that can potentially make you sick. if they are detected in the blood then the T or B lymphocytes will initiate a response.
the red pulp: serves as a blood reservoir where formed elements are stored.
