Question 1

Which of the following correctly describes the path of light as it enters the eye and is focused on the retina?

Accepted Answer

Light passes through the cornea, aqueous humor, lens, and vitreous humor before reaching the retina.

Question 2

What is the primary function of the lens in the process of focusing light on the retina?

Accepted Answer

To fine-tune the focus of light by changing its shape through accommodation.

Question 3

A patient is diagnosed with myopia. Which of the following best explains the optical defect in their eye?

Accepted Answer

The image from distant objects is focused in front of the retina due to an elongated eyeball.

Question 4

Which type of corrective lens is used to treat hyperopia, and why?

Accepted Answer

A convex lens, because it bends light before it enters the cornea to help focus the image on the retina.

Question 5

During accommodation for near vision, which of the following changes occur in the eye?

Accepted Answer

The ciliary muscles contract, suspensory ligaments loosen, and the lens becomes more rounded.

Question 6

Which equation best represents the relationship between the focal length ($$f$$), the object distance ($$d_o$$), and the image distance ($$d_i) in $$the eye's lens system?

Accepted Answer

$$\frac{1}{f} = \frac{1}{d_o} + \frac{1}{d_i}$$

Question 7

A person with an emmetropic eye has normal vision. What does this mean regarding the focusing of light?

Accepted Answer

Light is precisely focused on the retina, resulting in clear vision.

Question 8

Why does the image formed on the retina appear upside down, and how do we perceive it as right side up?

Accepted Answer

The lens inverts the image, but the brain processes and flips it to appear upright.

Question 9

Which of the following best describes the process of convergence during near vision?

Accepted Answer

Both eyes rotate medially to focus on a close object, aligning the image on corresponding areas of each retina.

Question 10

A patient complains of blurry near vision but clear distance vision. Which condition is most likely, and what is the underlying cause?

Accepted Answer

Hyperopia; the image is focused behind the retina due to a shortened eyeball or lazy lens.

Question 11

Which of the following best explains why accommodation and pupillary constriction occur simultaneously during near vision?

Accepted Answer

Constriction of the pupil reduces peripheral light rays, enhancing the focus of the image on the retina during accommodation.

Question 12

If the lens of the eye loses its flexibility and cannot become more rounded, which visual function would be most affected?

Accepted Answer

Focusing on near objects would become difficult.

Question 13

Which of the following statements about the refractive power of the eye's components is correct?

Accepted Answer

The cornea and lens are primarily responsible for bending light to focus it on the retina.

Question 14

A person with myopia is prescribed glasses with a lens power of $$-2.00$$ diopters. What type of lens is this, and what is its effect?

Accepted Answer

A concave lens; it diverges light rays before they enter the eye.

Question 15

Which of the following best describes the role of the ciliary body in vision?

Accepted Answer

It contracts to change the shape of the lens during accommodation.

Question 16

If a person’s suspensory ligaments remain tight and the lens stays flat, what type of vision will be most affected?

Accepted Answer

Near vision, because the lens cannot become rounded to increase refraction.

Question 17

Which of the following is a real-world consequence of uncorrected hyperopia in a child during school years?

Accepted Answer

Difficulty reading or seeing objects up close, potentially affecting academic performance.

Question 18

Which of the following best explains why a concave lens corrects myopia?

Accepted Answer

It diverges incoming light rays so that the image is focused further back onto the retina.
