Thoracic Cavity

The thoracic cavity is a major compartment of the human body located within the chest. It houses vital organs and structures essential for respiration and circulation. Understanding the anatomical features of the thoracic cavity is fundamental in anatomy and physiology.

  • Boundaries: The thoracic cavity is enclosed by the rib cage, sternum, thoracic vertebrae, and the diaphragm (which separates it from the abdominal cavity).

  • Main Subdivisions:

    • Pleural cavities (right and left): Surround each lung.

    • Mediastinum: Central compartment containing the heart, trachea, esophagus, and major blood vessels.

    • Pericardial cavity: Contains the heart within the mediastinum.

Key Structures of the Thoracic Cavity

  • Right and Left Lungs: Organs of respiration located in the right and left pleural cavities.

  • Pleural Cavities: Fluid-filled spaces surrounding each lung, reducing friction during breathing.

  • Mediastinum: The central region between the lungs, containing the heart, trachea, esophagus, and major vessels.

  • Pericardial Cavity: The space within the mediastinum that encloses the heart and is lined by the pericardium.

  • Aortic Arch: The curved portion of the aorta, the main artery leaving the heart, distributing blood to the body.

  • Superior Vena Cava: Large vein carrying deoxygenated blood from the upper body to the right atrium of the heart.

  • Trachea: The windpipe; a tube that conducts air from the larynx to the bronchi.

  • Primary Bronchi (Right and Left): The two main branches of the trachea that lead into each lung.

  • Esophagus: Muscular tube that transports food from the pharynx to the stomach, passing through the thoracic cavity.

  • Thoracic Aorta: The portion of the aorta that runs through the thoracic cavity, supplying oxygenated blood to the chest and upper body.

  • Diaphragm: The muscular sheet separating the thoracic and abdominal cavities; essential for breathing.

  • The pleura is a double-layered membrane surrounding each lung, consisting of the visceral pleura (on the lung surface) and parietal pleura (lining the cavity).
