Skull Anatomy

The skull is a complex structure composed of several bones that protect the brain and support facial structures. Understanding the anatomy of the skull is essential for students of anatomy and physiology, as it forms the basis for further study of the skeletal system.

Pelvic Anatomy

The pelvis is a ring-like bony structure located at the base of the spine. It supports the weight of the upper body, protects pelvic organs, and provides attachment points for muscles of the lower limb.

  • Ilium: The broad, flaring portion of the pelvis.

  • Ischium: The lower, posterior part of the pelvis; features the ischial tuberosity, which bears weight when sitting.

  • Pubis: The anterior portion of the pelvis; forms the pubic symphysis.

  • Sacrum: Triangular bone formed by the fusion of five sacral vertebrae; connects the spine to the pelvis.

  • Coccyx: Small, triangular bone at the base of the sacrum; commonly called the tailbone.

  • Sacroiliac Joint: Articulation between the sacrum and ilium; transmits weight from the upper body to the lower limbs.

  • Greater Sciatic Notch: Allows passage of the sciatic nerve.

  • Iliac Crest: Superior border of the ilium; important for muscle attachment.

  • Ischial Spine and Ischial Tuberosity: Landmarks for muscle attachment and support.

Vertebral Column and Thoracic Cage

The vertebral column and thoracic cage provide structural support, protect vital organs, and facilitate movement. The vertebral column consists of individual vertebrae, while the thoracic cage includes the ribs and sternum.

  • Common Vertebral Features: Each vertebra has a body, vertebral arch, and processes for muscle attachment.

  • Atlas (C1) and Axis (C2): Specialized cervical vertebrae that allow for nodding and rotation of the head.

  • Thoracic Cage: Composed of ribs, sternum, and thoracic vertebrae; protects the heart and lungs.

  • Rib Anatomy: Ribs articulate with thoracic vertebrae and the sternum; classified as true, false, or floating ribs.

Upper and Lower Limb Bones

  • Clavicle and Scapula: Form the pectoral girdle, connecting the upper limb to the trunk.

  • Humerus, Radius, and Ulna: Bones of the arm and forearm; articulate at the elbow joint.
