Introduction to the Muscular System
The muscular system is essential for all types of body movement, from locomotion to manipulation of objects. Muscles are specialized tissues that contract to produce force and movement. There are three basic types of muscle tissue found in the human body: skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle, and smooth muscle.

Types of Muscle Tissue
Skeletal Muscle
Skeletal muscle tissue is packaged into organs called skeletal muscles, which are attached to bones and skin. These muscles are responsible for voluntary movements and are under conscious control.
Skeletal muscle fibers are the longest muscle cells and have striations (visible stripes).
Also called voluntary muscle because their contraction can be consciously controlled.
They contract rapidly, tire easily, and are powerful.

Example: Muscles used for walking, writing, or facial expressions.
Cardiac Muscle
Cardiac muscle tissue is found only in the heart and makes up the bulk of the heart walls. It is responsible for pumping blood throughout the body.
Cardiac muscle is striated like skeletal muscle but is involuntary (cannot be consciously controlled).
Contracts at a steady rate due to the heart's own pacemaker, but the nervous system can increase the rate as needed.

Example: Heartbeat regulation and blood circulation.
Smooth Muscle
Smooth muscle tissue is found in the walls of hollow organs such as the stomach, urinary bladder, and airways. It is responsible for involuntary movements such as digestion and regulation of blood vessel diameter.
Not striated (no visible stripes).
Involuntary: cannot be consciously controlled.
Key words: visceral, nonstriated, involuntary.
Example: Movement of food through the digestive tract, control of blood pressure.
