The Axial Skeleton

Overview and Functions

The axial skeleton forms the central axis of the human body and is essential for protection, support, and movement. It consists of the skull, vertebral column, thoracic cage, auditory ossicles, and hyoid bone.

  • Protection: Shields the brain, spinal cord, and vital organs.

  • Support: Provides structural support for the head, neck, and trunk.

  • Attachment: Serves as anchor points for muscles involved in movement and respiration.

  • Respiratory Movements: Facilitates breathing through the thoracic cage.

  • Stabilization: Helps stabilize portions of the appendicular skeleton.

Components of the Axial Skeleton

  • Skull: 8 cranial bones and 14 facial bones.

  • Auditory Ossicles: 6 small bones in the middle ear.

  • Hyoid Bone: Supports the larynx and tongue.

  • Vertebral Column: 24 vertebrae, sacrum, and coccyx.

  • Thoracic Cage: Sternum and 24 ribs.

The Skull

Cranial Bones

The cranium consists of eight bones that enclose the cranial cavity, protecting the brain.

  • Occipital bone

  • Frontal bone

  • Sphenoid bone

  • Ethmoid bone

  • Left and right parietal bones

  • Left and right temporal bones

Facial Bones

The facial bones support the entrances to the digestive and respiratory tracts and shape the face. There are 14 facial bones:

  • Paired: maxillae, lacrimal, nasal, zygomatic, palatine, inferior nasal conchae

  • Unpaired: vomer, mandible

Skull Features

  • Sinuses: Air-filled chambers lined with mucous membranes, reducing skull weight.

  • Sutures: Immovable joints connecting skull bones, except the mandible.

Occipital Bone

The occipital bone forms the posterior and inferior surfaces of the cranium.

  • External occipital protuberance: Midline projection for ligament attachment.

  • Occipital condyles: Articulate with the atlas (C1 vertebra).

  • Foramen magnum: Large opening connecting cranial and spinal cavities.

  • Hypoglossal canals: Passageways for hypoglossal nerves.

Parietal Bones

The parietal bones form the lateral and superior portions of the cranium.

  • Temporal lines: Attachment points for the temporalis muscle.

  • Grooves: Mark pathways of blood vessels inside the bone.

Frontal Bone

The frontal bone forms the anterior cranium and the superior portion of the eye sockets.

  • Frontal sinuses: Help flush nasal cavities.

  • Supra-orbital margin: Protects the eyes.

  • Lacrimal fossa: Location for the lacrimal gland.

  • Supra-orbital foramen/notch: Passageway for nerves and blood vessels.

Temporal Bones

The temporal bones form part of the lateral walls of the cranium and house structures of the ear.

  • Zygomatic arches: Articulate with the mandible.

  • Mastoid process: Muscle attachment, contains air cells.

  • Styloid process: Ligament and tendon attachment.

  • Petrous portion: Houses inner ear structures.

  • Carotid canal: Passage for internal carotid artery.

  • External acoustic meatus: Canal from outer to middle ear.

Sphenoid Bone

The sphenoid bone forms part of the cranial floor, connects cranial and facial bones, and strengthens the skull.

  • Sphenoid sinus: Cleanses nasal cavity.

  • Sella turcica: Encloses the pituitary gland.

  • Greater and lesser wings: Form portions of the cranial floor.

  • Pterygoid processes: Muscle attachment sites.

  • Optic canal: Passage for optic nerve.

  • Foramina: Passageways for nerves and vessels (rotundum, ovale, spinosum).

Ethmoid Bone

The ethmoid bone forms the anterolateral floor of the cranium, roof of the nasal cavity, and part of the nasal septum and medial orbital wall.

  • Ethmoid sinuses: Network of air cells opening into nasal cavities.

  • Cribriform plate: Contains olfactory foramina for nerve passage.

  • Perpendicular plate: Forms part of the nasal septum.

  • Superior and middle nasal conchae: Create air turbulence in nasal cavity.

Facial Bones

Maxillae

The maxillae support the upper teeth, form the upper jaw and hard palate, and contribute to the orbital rim and external nares.

  • Maxillary sinuses: Produce mucous for nasal cavities.

  • Alveolar processes: Support upper teeth.

  • Palatine processes: Form anterior hard palate.

  • Infra-orbital foramen: Passage for nerves and vessels.

Palatine Bones

The palatine bones form the posterior aspect of the hard palate and contribute to the orbital floors.

  • Horizontal plate: Posterior hard palate.

  • Perpendicular plate: Extends from horizontal plate, gives off orbital processes.

Nasal Bones, Vomer, and Inferior Nasal Conchae

The nasal bones support the bridge of the nose. The vomer forms the inferior nasal septum, and the inferior nasal conchae create air turbulence in the nasal cavity.

Zygomatic Bones and Lacrimal Bones

The zygomatic bones form the rim and lateral wall of the orbit and part of the zygomatic arch. The lacrimal bones form part of the medial orbital wall and house the lacrimal sacs.

Mandible

The mandible forms the lower jaw and supports the lower teeth.

  • Alveolar process: Supports lower teeth.

  • Body: Horizontal portion.

  • Ramus: Ascending portion.

  • Condylar process: Articulates with temporal bone.

  • Coronoid process: Muscle insertion point.

  • Mandibular notch: Separates condylar and coronoid processes.

Fontanelles and Ossification Centers

The infant skull contains multiple ossification centers and fibrous areas called fontanelles that allow for distortion during birth and growth.

Vertebral Column

Structure and Functions

The vertebral column consists of 24 vertebrae, a sacrum, and a coccyx. It supports the head and neck, transfers weight to the lower limbs, and protects the spinal cord.

  • Primary curves: Develop in fetal life (thoracic and sacral).

  • Secondary curves: Develop after birth (cervical and lumbar).

  • Intervertebral discs: Pads of fibrocartilage between vertebrae.

Cervical Vertebrae

There are seven cervical vertebrae (C1-C7). The atlas (C1) and axis (C2) are unique in shape and function, allowing for head movements.

  • Atlas (C1): Supports the skull, allows "yes" movement.

  • Axis (C2): Contains the dens, allows "no" movement.

  • Vertebra prominens (C7): Has a long spinous process.

Thoracic Vertebrae

There are twelve thoracic vertebrae (T1-T12), each with costal facets for rib articulation.

  • T1-T9: Superior and inferior costal facets.

  • T10-T12: One costal facet.

  • T1-T10: Transverse costal facets.

Lumbar Vertebrae

There are five lumbar vertebrae (L1-L5), characterized by the absence of costal facets, spatulated spinous processes, and triangular vertebral foramen.

Sacrum

The sacrum consists of five fused sacral vertebrae and protects reproductive, digestive, and urinary organs.

  • Sacral canal: Passage for sacral nerves.

  • Sacral foramina: Exit points for sacral nerves.

  • Auricular surface: Articulates with pelvic girdle.

  • Sacral promontory: Prominent bulge at sacral base.

Coccyx

The coccyx or tailbone forms from the fusion of three to five coccygeal vertebrae and provides attachment for ligaments associated with the anus.

Thoracic Cage

Ribs

The ribs are elongated, curved bones that articulate with the thoracic vertebrae.

  • True ribs: Pairs 1-7, connect to sternum via costal cartilages.

  • False ribs: Pairs 8-12, do not directly attach to sternum.

  • Vertebrochondral ribs: Pairs 8-10, connect to cartilage of rib 7.

  • Floating ribs: Pairs 11-12, no connection to sternum.

Sternum

The sternum forms the anterior midline of the thoracic wall and consists of three parts:

  • Manubrium: Articulates with clavicles and first ribs.

  • Body: Attaches to manubrium, xiphoid process, and costal cartilages.

  • Xiphoid process: Last to ossify, connects to diaphragm and rectus abdominis.

Hyoid Bone

The hyoid bone supports the larynx and serves as an attachment site for muscles of the larynx, pharynx, and tongue.

  • Greater horns: Muscle attachment for tongue movement.

  • Lesser horns: Attach to stylohyoid ligaments.
