Skeletal System

Overview of the Skeletal System

The skeletal system is a fundamental organ system in the human body, providing structure, protection, and facilitating movement. It is composed of bones, cartilage, ligaments, and joints, and is essential for maintaining the body's shape and supporting vital functions.

  • Support and Protection: The skeleton provides a rigid framework that supports the body and protects internal organs (e.g., the skull protects the brain, the rib cage protects the heart and lungs).

  • Body Movement: Bones act as levers and points of attachment for muscles, enabling movement when muscles contract.

  • Blood Cell Formation (Hematopoiesis): The process of blood cell production occurs in the red bone marrow found within certain bones.

  • Storage of Inorganic Materials: Bones store minerals such as calcium and potassium, which can be released into the bloodstream as needed.

Structure of a Long Bone

Long bones, such as the femur and humerus, have a specialized structure that supports their function in movement and mineral storage.

  • Diaphysis: The shaft or central part of a long bone, composed mainly of compact bone for strength.

  • Epiphysis: The ends of the bone, typically filled with spongy bone and red marrow.

  • Articular Cartilage: Hyaline cartilage covering the epiphysis, reducing friction and absorbing shock at joints.

  • Periosteum: A dense membrane covering the outer surface of the bone, containing nerves and blood vessels.

  • Medullary Cavity: The hollow chamber within the diaphysis, filled with yellow marrow (fat storage) in adults.

  • Endosteum: The lining of the medullary cavity.

Bone Tissue and Cells

Bones are made of osseous tissue, which consists of a matrix of collagen fibers and inorganic salts. The organization of bone tissue allows for both strength and flexibility.

  • Osteocytes: Mature bone cells located in small cavities called lacunae.

  • Lamellae: Concentric rings of bone matrix surrounding a central canal.

  • Haversian (Central) Canal: Contains blood vessels and nerves; part of the osteon (Haversian system).

  • Canaliculi: Tiny canals connecting osteocytes, allowing for nutrient and waste exchange.

  • Volkmann's Canals: Transverse canals that connect Haversian canals, facilitating blood flow across bone.

Osteon (Haversian System)

The osteon is the fundamental functional unit of compact bone, consisting of concentric lamellae around a central canal.

Functions of Bone Marrow

  • Red Marrow: Site of hematopoiesis (production of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets).

  • Yellow Marrow: Primarily stores fat; can convert to red marrow if necessary.

Mineral Storage and Homeostasis

Bones act as reservoirs for minerals, especially calcium and phosphorus, which are essential for various physiological processes.

  • Calcium Homeostasis: Bones release or absorb calcium to maintain blood calcium levels, regulated by hormones such as parathyroid hormone and calcitonin.

Key Terms

  • Hematopoiesis: The process of blood cell formation in bone marrow.

  • Osteon: The structural unit of compact bone.

  • Periosteum: Membrane covering the bone's surface.

  • Articular Cartilage: Cartilage covering bone ends at joints.

Additional info: The skeletal system is also involved in endocrine regulation through the release of osteocalcin, a hormone that influences energy metabolism.
