  • Allosteric Effector

Regulatory molecule binding to a specific site on an enzyme, altering its activity or initial reaction velocity.
  • Allosteric Site

Distinct region on an enzyme where regulatory molecules attach, influencing enzyme function without occupying the active site.
  • Allosteric Enzyme

Protein whose activity is modulated by molecules binding at sites other than the active site, often displaying sigmoidal kinetics.
  • Heterotrophic Effector

Regulatory molecule affecting enzyme activity on a substrate different from itself, often altering reaction rates.
  • Homotrophic Effector

Substrate molecule serving as its own regulator, influencing enzyme activity on itself through allosteric binding.
  • Activator

Molecule stabilizing the R state of an enzyme, increasing reaction velocity and shifting the sigmoidal curve left.
  • Inhibitor

Molecule stabilizing the T state of an enzyme, decreasing reaction velocity and shifting the sigmoidal curve right.
  • R State

Enzyme conformation associated with higher activity, favored by activators and linked to increased substrate turnover.
  • T State

Enzyme conformation associated with lower activity, favored by inhibitors and linked to reduced substrate turnover.
  • Allosteric Constant (L naught)

Ratio of T state to R state concentrations, decreased by activators and increased by inhibitors.
  • Sigmoidal Curve

Graphical representation of enzyme kinetics showing cooperative substrate binding, shifted by allosteric effectors.
  • Initial Reaction Velocity

Rate of product formation at the start of an enzyme-catalyzed reaction, influenced by allosteric effectors.
  • Vmax

Maximum rate achieved by an enzyme, sometimes altered by allosteric effectors depending on their impact.
  • Aspartate Transcarbamylase (ATCase)

Enzyme regulated by ATP and CTP, catalyzing the conversion of carbamoyl phosphate and aspartate to carbamoyl aspartate.
  • ATP

Molecule acting as an allosteric activator for ATCase, increasing enzyme activity and shifting the kinetic curve left.
  • CTP

Molecule acting as an allosteric inhibitor for ATCase, decreasing enzyme activity and shifting the kinetic curve right.
