Course Overview

Course Description and Structure

This course provides an introduction to College Algebra, focusing on the development of algebraic skills and concepts necessary for further study in mathematics and related fields. Instruction is delivered online, with both asynchronous and synchronous components, and includes regular opportunities for student-instructor interaction.

  • Topics Covered: Linear, quadratic, rational, and radical equations; inequalities; functions and their graphs; polynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic functions; systems of equations; and applications.

  • Instructional Methods: Online lectures, assignments, quizzes, and exams delivered through Blackboard and MyMathLab.

  • Student Expectations: Active participation, timely completion of assignments, and regular communication with the instructor.

  • Textbook: MyMathLab digital content (access provided with course fee). A physical textbook is optional.

  • Calculator: Optional. Preferred model: Casio 300 ES scientific calculator. TI-30XIIS also permitted. Graphing calculators are not permitted for this course.

  • Headphones: Required for online work and proctored exams.

Course Competencies

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Perform operations on integers and real numbers, including order of operations.

  2. Add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers and decimals.

  3. Apply ratios, rates, and percentages to solve application problems.

  4. Simplify fractions and decimals, and calculate percent change.

  5. Simplify radicals and find decimal approximations.

  6. Apply conversion units for length, area, volume, time, currency, or speed.

  7. Convert between decimals and percentages.

  8. Solve linear equations in one variable.

  9. Solve linear inequalities in one variable.

  10. Solve absolute value equations and inequalities.

  11. Graph linear equations and inequalities in the Cartesian coordinate plane.

  12. Identify and use points in the Cartesian coordinate system.

  13. Interpret slope, intercepts, and forms of linear equations.

  14. Factor polynomials by common factors, grouping, and special products.

  15. Simplify rational expressions and solve rational equations.

  16. Solve quadratic equations by factoring, completing the square, and quadratic formula.

  17. Solve and evaluate linear, polynomial, rational, and exponential functions.

  18. Apply algebraic concepts to solve real-world problems.

Assessment and Grading

  • Proctored Exams: Some exams require online proctoring. A webcam and microphone are required.

  • Grading Policy: Grades are based on assignments, quizzes, exams, and participation. Late work may be penalized.

  • Withdrawal Policy: Students may withdraw before the 60% point of the semester. See the syllabus for details on financial aid implications.
