To prevent water in an engine's cooling system from freezing, antifreeze is used as an additive in automotive fluids. The added antifreeze lowers the freezing point of water. Dyes are also added to antifreeze. Why?
HClO3 and HClO2 are both oxyacids but HClO3 is a strong electrolyte while HClO2 is a weak electrolyte. Identify the curve in the illustration below that depicts the change in a solution's boiling point when the solution is made up of 1 mole of HClO3 and 1 kg of water and the change when the solution is made up of 1 mole of HClO2 and 1 kg of water.
Choose the solution that will result in the greatest osmotic pressure at equilibrium.
Adding 1 mol magnesium chloride (MgCl2) in 1 kg of water will cause a greater increase in boiling point than adding 1 mol of glucose (C6H12O6) in the same amount of water. Explain why.
