Question 1

Which of the following best describes the location and general shape of the human heart?

Accepted Answer

It is a cone-shaped muscular organ located in the mediastinum, slightly left of the midline.

Question 2

Which statement correctly differentiates the pulmonary and systemic circuits of the cardiovascular system?

Accepted Answer

The pulmonary circuit transports blood between the heart and lungs for gas exchange, while the systemic circuit delivers oxygenated blood to tissues throughout the body.

Question 3

Which layer of the heart wall is responsible for the contractile force that pumps blood?

Accepted Answer

Myocardium

Question 4

What is the primary function of the heart valves?

Accepted Answer

To prevent the backflow of blood and ensure unidirectional flow through the heart.

Question 5

During the flow of blood through the heart, which structure carries oxygenated blood?

Accepted Answer

Left ventricle

Question 6

Which of the following correctly matches a heart structure with its function?

Accepted Answer

Left atrium: receives oxygenated blood from the pulmonary veins

Question 7

Which statement best describes the structure of cardiac muscle cells?

Accepted Answer

They are multinucleated, striated, and connected by intercalated discs.

Question 8

Which process occurs during depolarization of a cardiac muscle cell?

Accepted Answer

Sodium ions rapidly enter the cell, causing the interior to become more positive.

Question 9

Which pacemaker cell type initiates the heartbeat and sets the pace for the heart rate?

Accepted Answer

Sinoatrial (SA) node

Question 10

Trace the flow of electrical conduction through the heart. Which is the correct sequence?

Accepted Answer

SA node → AV node → Bundle of His → Purkinje fibers

Question 11

Which wave on an ECG represents ventricular depolarization?

Accepted Answer

QRS complex

Question 12

What does the T wave on an ECG represent?

Accepted Answer

Ventricular repolarization

Question 13

How do pressure gradients in the heart affect the opening and closing of valves?

Accepted Answer

Valves open when pressure is higher behind them and close when pressure is higher in front of them.

Question 14

Which formula correctly calculates stroke volume ($$SV$$)?

Accepted Answer

$$SV = EDV - ESV$$

Question 15

If a patient has an end-diastolic volume ($$EDV) of 120 mL $$and an end-systolic volume ($$ESV) of 50 mL$$, what is their stroke volume ($$SV$$)?

Accepted Answer

$$SV = 120 - 50 = 70 mL$$

Question 16

Which equation is used to calculate cardiac output ($$CO$$)?

Accepted Answer

$$CO = HR imes SV$$

Question 17

According to the Frank-Starling law, which statement is correct?

Accepted Answer

The greater the stretch of cardiac muscle fibers during filling, the stronger the contraction.

Question 18

Which of the following factors does NOT influence stroke volume?

Accepted Answer

Heart rate

Question 19

Which agent would increase the force of cardiac contraction?

Accepted Answer

A positive inotropic agent

Question 20

Which hormone increases cardiac output by increasing blood volume?

Accepted Answer

Aldosterone
