Syndesmosis; dense fibrous connective tissue

Question 4

Which of the following movements is defined as decreasing the angle between two bones, usually in the sagittal plane?

Accepted Answer

Flexion

Question 5

The periodontal ligament is associated with which type of joint?

Accepted Answer

Gomphosis

Question 6

Which of the following equations best represents the relationship between muscle force ($$F$$), lever arm length ($$r$$), and torque ($$	au) at a $$synovial joint?

Accepted Answer

$$	au = F imes r$$

Question 7

Which structural classification of joints is most likely to be freely movable?

Accepted Answer

Synovial

Question 8

A football player suffers a meniscus tear in his knee. Which structure is damaged, and what is its function?

Accepted Answer

Fibrocartilage disc; stabilizes joint and reduces wear and tear

Question 9

Which of the following best describes circumduction at a synovial joint?

Accepted Answer

Moving a limb so that it describes a cone in space, involving flexion, abduction, extension, and adduction

Question 10

Which of the following factors most directly increases the stability of a synovial joint?

Accepted Answer

Greater number and location of ligaments

Question 11

Which type of cartilaginous joint is found between the vertebrae and is composed of fibrocartilage?

Accepted Answer

Symphysis

A patient is unable to perform dorsiflexion. Which movement is impaired?

Accepted Answer

Bending the foot toward the tibia

Question 13

Which of the following is a real-life example of a syndesmosis joint?

Accepted Answer

Interosseous membrane connecting radius and ulna

Question 14

Which movement involves the rotation of the radius over the ulna, resulting in the palm facing posteriorly?

Accepted Answer

Pronation

Question 15

Which of the following best explains why muscle tone is important for joint stability, especially in the shoulder and knee?

Accepted Answer

It keeps tendons under tension, reinforcing the joint.

Question 16

Which type of joint is classified as 'peg-in-socket' and is exemplified by the connection between teeth and their sockets?

Accepted Answer

Gomphosis

Question 17

Which of the following movements is NOT an angular movement?

Gliding

Question 18

A patient with arthritis in the hip joint is experiencing pain due to the loss of which structure that cushions and absorbs compression at the ends of bones?

Accepted Answer

Articular cartilage

Question 19

Which of the following best describes the function of bursae in synovial joints?

Accepted Answer

They cushion and reduce friction where ligaments, muscles, skin, tendons, or bones rub together.

Question 20

Which equation would you use to calculate the total number of possible planes of movement ($$P) $$for a multiaxial synovial joint, given that each axis ($$a) $$allows movement in two directions?

Accepted Answer

$$P = 2 imes a$$
