$$T_{muscle} = k \times (I_{alpha} + I_{gamma})$$

Question 1

Which of the following correctly lists the steps in a neural reflex arc in the proper order?

Accepted Answer

Receptor, sensory neuron, integration center, motor neuron, effector

Question 2

Which statement best distinguishes negative feedback from feedforward responses in neural control?

Accepted Answer

Negative feedback corrects deviations from a set point after they occur, while feedforward anticipates and prepares for changes before they happen.

Question 3

Which of the following is an example of a learned (conditioned) reflex?

Accepted Answer

Salivating at the sound of a bell after repeated association with food

Question 4

Autonomic reflex integration centers can be found in which of the following locations?

Accepted Answer

In the spinal cord, brain stem, and hypothalamus

Question 5

Which of the following best describes the influence of emotions and higher brain centers on autonomic reflexes?

Accepted Answer

They can modulate the strength and pattern of autonomic reflexes.

Question 6

Autonomic reflexes are always:

Accepted Answer

Polysynaptic

Question 7

What is the only way to achieve skeletal muscle relaxation in response to a stimulus?

Accepted Answer

Inhibition of the alpha motor neuron

Question 8

Which of the following is NOT a type of proprioceptor found in the body?

Accepted Answer

Pacinian corpuscle

Question 9

Alpha motor neurons:

Accepted Answer

Innervate extrafusal muscle fibers and cause muscle contraction

Question 10

Which of the following best describes the function of the Golgi tendon organ?

Accepted Answer

It senses muscle tension and inhibits excessive contraction to prevent damage.

Question 11

Muscle spindles respond to muscle stretch by:

Accepted Answer

Increasing the firing rate of sensory neurons to initiate a contraction

Question 12

Which equation best represents muscle tone as a function of neural input?

Accepted Answer

$$T_{muscle} = k imes (I_{alpha} + I_{gamma})$$

Question 13

The protective purpose of the stretch reflex is to:

Accepted Answer

Prevent overstretching and potential muscle injury

Question 14

Alpha-gamma coactivation during voluntary movement ensures that:

Accepted Answer

Muscle spindles remain sensitive to stretch even as the muscle contracts

Question 15

Reciprocal inhibition in the knee jerk reflex involves:

Accepted Answer

Inhibition of the antagonist muscle while the agonist contracts

Question 16

How can a single sensory stimulus transmitted through one sensory neuron create two opposing responses?

Accepted Answer

By synapsing with both excitatory and inhibitory interneurons in the spinal cord

Question 17

Which of the following best describes the crossed extensor reflex?

Accepted Answer

It causes the opposite limb to extend when the other limb flexes in response to pain.

Question 18

Which of the following is NOT a category of movement classified by the nervous system?

Accepted Answer

Involuntary

Question 19

Central pattern generators (CPGs) play a crucial role in:

Accepted Answer

Generating rhythmic movements such as walking and breathing

Question 20

Which of the following best explains the difference between reflex control of visceral muscles and skeletal muscles?

Accepted Answer

Visceral muscle reflexes are typically slower and involve more integration centers than skeletal muscle reflexes.
