Question 1

Which statement best describes the absolute refractory period of a neuron?

Accepted Answer

No additional action potentials can be evoked, regardless of stimulus strength.

Question 2

During the relative refractory period, what is required to initiate another action potential?

Accepted Answer

A stimulus stronger than normal.

Question 3

Which ion channel activity marks the beginning of the absolute refractory period?

Accepted Answer

Na\+ channels open.

Question 4

What is the primary function of the absolute refractory period in neuronal signaling?

Accepted Answer

Ensures unidirectional propagation of action potentials.

Question 5

If the absolute refractory period of a neuron is 0.01 seconds, what is the maximum frequency of action potentials that can be propagated?

Accepted Answer

$$\frac{1}{0.01} = 100$$ action potentials per second

Question 6

Which of the following best explains why the relative refractory period prevents overexcitation of neurons?

Accepted Answer

It requires a stronger-than-normal stimulus to initiate another action potential.

Question 7

During which phase of the action potential are Na\+ channels returning to their resting state?

Accepted Answer

Absolute refractory period

Question 8

A patient is experiencing repetitive firing of neurons. Which period is most likely shortened, leading to this condition?

Accepted Answer

Absolute refractory period

Question 9

Which of the following is NOT a function of the absolute refractory period?

Accepted Answer

Allows for bidirectional propagation of action potentials.

Question 10

During the relative refractory period, which ion channels are open?

Accepted Answer

Some K\+ channels

Question 11

Which of the following best describes the time course of the absolute refractory period?

Accepted Answer

$$4-2$$ milliseconds

Question 12

What would happen if the relative refractory period did not exist?

Accepted Answer

Neurons could be overexcited, leading to continuous firing.

Question 13

Which of the following scenarios best illustrates the concept of the relative refractory period?

Accepted Answer

A neuron fires a second action potential only when a stronger stimulus is applied before it returns to resting potential.

Question 14

Which of the following is a direct consequence of the absolute refractory period?

Accepted Answer

Action potentials do not overlap and are distinct events.

Question 15

A neuron is stimulated twice in rapid succession. The second stimulus fails to produce an action potential. What period is the neuron most likely in?

Accepted Answer

Absolute refractory period

Question 16

Which of the following best explains why the maximum frequency of action potentials is limited?

Accepted Answer

The duration of the absolute refractory period sets a minimum time between action potentials.

Question 17

During the absolute refractory period, which of the following is true regarding Na\+ channels?

Accepted Answer

They are either open or inactivated and cannot be reopened.

Question 18

Which of the following best describes the end of the relative refractory period?

Accepted Answer

Resting potential is reestablished.

Question 19

A neuron receives a stimulus during the relative refractory period. What is the most likely outcome?

Accepted Answer

A second action potential may be generated if the stimulus is strong enough.

Question 20

Which of the following is a key difference between the absolute and relative refractory periods?

Accepted Answer

Absolute refractory period does not allow any action potential, while relative refractory period allows action potential with a stronger stimulus.
