Question 3

Which of the following is a key difference between endocrine and exocrine glands?

Accepted Answer

Endocrine glands secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream, while exocrine glands secrete their products into ducts that empty onto surfaces or into cavities.

Question 5

Which statement best describes the difference between lipid-soluble and water-soluble hormones?

Accepted Answer

Lipid-soluble hormones can diffuse through the cell membrane and bind to intracellular receptors, while water-soluble hormones bind to membrane receptors and use second messengers.

Question 6

How are steroid (lipid-soluble) hormones transported in the blood?

Accepted Answer

They bind to transport proteins synthesized by the liver, which make them water-soluble for transport.

Accepted Answer

Antidiuretic hormone (ADH)

Question 11

A tumor causing hypersecretion of aldosterone would most likely result in which of the following clinical findings?

Accepted Answer

Parathyroid hormone (PTH)

Question 19

Which of the following is a correct formula for the conversion of ATP to cAMP by adenylate cyclase in the action of water-soluble hormones?

Accepted Answer

$$\mathrm{ATP} \xrightarrow{	ext{adenylate cyclase}} \mathrm{cAMP} + \mathrm{PP_i}$$
