Accepted Answer

Molecular layer

Question 4

The neocortex is organized into six horizontal layers. Which layer is primarily responsible for receiving major activating inputs from the thalamus?

Accepted Answer

Layer IV (Internal granular layer)

Question 5

Which of the following statements about the evolutionary origin of the neocortex is most accurate based on current research?

Accepted Answer

The neocortex shares structural and functional similarities with the dorsal cortex of reptiles.

Question 6

A neuroscientist is studying a brain region responsible for task switching, reinforcement learning, and decision-making. Which lobe of the neocortex is she most likely investigating?

Accepted Answer

Frontal lobe

Question 7

Which of the following best explains why the neocortex has a wrinkled surface with sulci and gyri?

Accepted Answer

To maximize the surface area for higher-order cognitive processing

Question 8

Which of the following is NOT a primary function of the neocortex?

Accepted Answer

Regulation of heart rate and breathing

Question 9

A lesion in the temporal lobe would most likely result in impairment of which function?

Accepted Answer

Declarative memory and language processing

Question 10

Accepted Answer

$$8 imes 10^9$

Question 11

Which of the following best describes the main difference between the neocortex and the dorsal cortex in terms of neuronal activation?

Accepted Answer

The neocortex receives major activating inputs through a stellate of neurons in layer IV, while the dorsal cortex receives inputs on apical dendrites.

Question 12

Which of the following is a correct pairing of neocortical lobe and its primary function?

Accepted Answer

Parietal lobe – Spatial awareness

Question 13

A patient with frontotemporal dementia is most likely to exhibit deficits in which of the following?

Accepted Answer

Executive function and goal-directed behavior

Question 14

Which of the following best explains why the neocortex is considered the 'command center' for higher-order cognitive processes?

Accepted Answer

It integrates sensory input, motor planning, language, and memory for conscious thought and reasoning.

Question 15

Which of the following accurately describes the organization of the neocortex?

Accepted Answer

It consists of six distinct horizontal layers, each with unique neuronal characteristics.

Question 16

Which of the following best describes the role of the hippocampus and amygdala within the temporal lobe?

Accepted Answer

They process sensory information and are critical for language, emotions, and meaningful memories.

Question 17

Which of the following is a plausible explanation for the increased surface area of the neocortex in humans compared to early mammals?

Accepted Answer

The development of deep sulci and gyri allowed more neurons to be packed into the limited cranial space.

Question 18

Which of the following best describes declarative memory as processed by the temporal lobe?

Accepted Answer

It is memory that can be spoken aloud, including learned facts and events.

Question 19

Which of the following is a distinguishing feature of the neocortex compared to other regions of the cerebral cortex?

Accepted Answer

It is organized into six horizontal layers with distinct neuronal types.

Question 20

A neuroscientist is comparing the input pathways of the dorsal cortex and the neocortex. Which of the following statements is most accurate?

Accepted Answer

The dorsal cortex receives sensory inputs on apical dendrites, while the neocortex receives inputs via stellate neurons in layer IV.
