Question 1

Which of the following best describes the primary function of the respiratory system?

Accepted Answer

To facilitate the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the atmosphere and the blood

Question 2

During inspiration, which sequence correctly lists the order of structures that air passes through, starting from the external environment?

Accepted Answer

Nasal cavity → pharynx → larynx → trachea → bronchi → bronchioles → alveoli

Question 3

Which of the following statements about Boyle’s Law is correct, and how does it relate to pulmonary ventilation?

Accepted Answer

Boyle’s Law states that $$P_1V_1 = P_2V_2$$, meaning that as the volume of the thoracic cavity increases, the pressure inside the lungs decreases, causing air to flow in.

Question 4

Which muscles are primarily responsible for quiet inspiration?

Accepted Answer

Diaphragm and external intercostal muscles

Question 5

A patient with asthma experiences bronchoconstriction. According to the equation $$F = \frac{P}{R}$$, what is the effect on airflow ($$F) if $$resistance ($$R) $$increases while pressure difference ($$P) $$remains constant?

Accepted Answer

Airflow decreases

Question 6

Which of the following best explains why pulmonary surfactant is essential for normal lung function?

Accepted Answer

It reduces alveolar surface tension, preventing alveolar collapse during expiration

Question 7

If a person ascends to high altitude, how does the partial pressure gradient for oxygen between alveolar air and pulmonary capillary blood change, and what is the physiological consequence?

Accepted Answer

The gradient decreases, resulting in less oxygen diffusing into the blood

Question 8

Which of the following best describes the effect of increased temperature, decreased pH, and increased $$P_{CO_2$} on $$the oxygen-hemoglobin dissociation curve?

Accepted Answer

The curve shifts down and to the right, promoting oxygen unloading at the tissues

Question 9

Which of the following is a correct definition of anatomical dead space?

Accepted Answer

The volume of air in the conducting airways that does not participate in gas exchange

Question 10

A patient with chronic bronchitis has increased airway resistance. Which of the following best explains the physiological impact on pulmonary ventilation?

Accepted Answer

Increased resistance decreases airflow, making it harder to ventilate the lungs

Question 11

According to Dalton’s Law, which of the following statements is correct regarding the partial pressures of gases in a mixture?

Accepted Answer

The total pressure is the sum of the partial pressures of each individual gas

Question 12

Which of the following best describes the role of the medullary respiratory centers in the brainstem?

Accepted Answer

They generate the basic rhythm of breathing by sending signals to respiratory muscles

Question 13

If alveolar ventilation is reduced in a region of the lung, what is the expected response in pulmonary blood flow to that region?

Accepted Answer

Pulmonary blood flow decreases to match the reduced ventilation

Question 14

Which of the following is the correct formula for calculating vital capacity ($$VC) $$using respiratory volumes?

Accepted Answer

$$VC = IRV + TV + ERV$$

Question 15

A person is exposed to high levels of carbon dioxide. Which of the following is the most immediate effect on their respiratory rate and depth?

Accepted Answer

Both respiratory rate and depth increase due to stimulation of central chemoreceptors

Question 16

Which of the following best explains why patients with emphysema have difficulty exhaling?

Accepted Answer

Loss of elastic recoil in the lungs reduces the force needed to expel air

Question 17

Which of the following scenarios would shift the oxygen-hemoglobin dissociation curve up and to the left, and what is the physiological significance?

Accepted Answer

Decreased temperature and decreased $$P_{CO_2$}$$, which increases hemoglobin’s affinity for oxygen and promotes loading in the lungs

Question 18

Which of the following best describes the effect of voluntary hyperventilation on blood pH?

Accepted Answer

Blood pH increases (alkalosis) due to excessive loss of $$CO_2$$

Question 19

Which of the following best explains why tuberculosis (TB) disrupts respiratory homeostasis?

Accepted Answer

It causes granuloma formation and fibrosis, reducing the surface area for gas exchange
