Understand that meiosis is a type of cell division that reduces the chromosome number by half, resulting in the production of gametes or spores.
Recall that meiosis consists of two consecutive divisions: meiosis I and meiosis II.
In meiosis I, homologous chromosomes are separated into two different cells, reducing the chromosome number by half.
In meiosis II, the sister chromatids of each chromosome are separated, similar to mitosis, resulting in four genetically distinct haploid cells.
Conclude that at the end of meiosis, four daughter cells are produced, each with half the number of chromosomes as the original cell.
