Question 1

Which of the following is NOT one of the four major abiotic components of climate?

Accepted Answer

Soil composition

Question 2

Global climate is primarily determined by which of the following factors?

Accepted Answer

The tilt of Earth's axis and solar energy input

Question 3

Lake effect snow near Lake Michigan is best explained by which process?

Accepted Answer

Cold air moves over warmer lake water, picking up moisture and depositing it as snow on the downwind shore.

Question 4

Why does the equator receive the most rainfall, and during which season does the Indian monsoon bring the most rain?

Accepted Answer

Warm, moist air rises at the equator, causing frequent rain; the Indian monsoon brings the most rain in summer.

Question 5

What causes the wind to blow, and in which direction do winds predominantly blow at the equator?

Accepted Answer

Differences in air pressure cause wind; at the equator, winds (trade winds) blow from east to west.

Question 6

The Rocky and Sierra Nevada mountains in the western U.S. receive the most precipitation on which side, and why is the other side often a desert?

Accepted Answer

West side receives most precipitation due to moist air rising and cooling; east side is dry due to rain shadow effect.

Question 7

Why are there palm trees in southern England, despite its northern latitude?

Accepted Answer

The Gulf Stream brings warm ocean currents, moderating the climate.

Question 8

Why might palm trees in southern England stop growing if global climate warming continues?

Accepted Answer

Increased temperatures could disrupt ocean currents, making the climate colder.

Question 9

Arrange the following North American biomes from wettest to driest: Temperate rainforest, Desert, Grassland, Deciduous forest.

Accepted Answer

Temperate rainforest, Deciduous forest, Grassland, Desert

Question 10

What largely determines the distribution of biomes on land?

Accepted Answer

Temperature and precipitation patterns

Question 11

Which of the following are the three main limiting abiotic factors for life in the ocean?

Accepted Answer

Light, nutrients, and temperature

Question 12

During which seasons do lakes in temperate regions typically show turnover, and when do they have a steep temperature cline?

Accepted Answer

Turnover in spring and fall; steep temperature cline in summer

Question 13

A scientist measures the temperature profile of a lake in July and finds a sharp change in temperature at a certain depth. What is this phenomenon called, and what is its ecological significance?

Accepted Answer

Thermocline; it limits mixing of surface and deep waters, affecting nutrient distribution.

Question 14

Which equation best represents the relationship between solar energy input and Earth's surface temperature?

Accepted Answer

$$ Q = \sigma T^4$ $$

Question 15

If the prevailing winds at the equator are called trade winds, which direction do they blow and why?

Accepted Answer

From east to west, due to the Coriolis effect and Earth's rotation.

Question 16

A city is located on the east side of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Which of the following best describes its likely climate and why?

Accepted Answer

Dry, because it is in the rain shadow of the mountains.

Question 17

Which of the following best explains why the Indian monsoon brings heavy rainfall during the summer?

Accepted Answer

Land heats up faster than the ocean, causing moist air to flow from the ocean to the land.

Question 18

Which of the following is a direct consequence of the rain shadow effect?

Accepted Answer

Deserts form on the leeward side of mountain ranges.

Question 19

Which of the following best describes the process of lake turnover?

Accepted Answer

Mixing of surface and deep waters, redistributing oxygen and nutrients.

Question 20

Which factor is most responsible for the formation of different biomes across North America?

Accepted Answer

Variation in temperature and precipitation across regions.
