Question 1

Which concept did Charles Darwin challenge with his theory of evolution by natural selection?

Accepted Answer

The fixed species concept

Question 2

Which scientist's work on population growth influenced Darwin's thinking about competition and survival?

Accepted Answer

Thomas Malthus

Question 3

What is the main difference between the pattern and process in evolutionary biology?

Accepted Answer

Pattern refers to scientific data; process refers to mechanisms producing change

Question 4

Which of the following best describes the principle of uniformitarianism?

Accepted Answer

Geologic processes operating today are the same as those in the past

Question 5

Why was the study of fossils important to Darwin's theory of evolution?

Accepted Answer

Fossils provided evidence of species changing over time

Question 6

Which mechanism did Lamarck incorrectly propose for evolutionary change?

Accepted Answer

Inheritance of acquired characteristics

Question 7

A population of beetles is exposed to a new predator. Over generations, the beetles with harder shells survive and reproduce more. Which evolutionary concept does this scenario illustrate?

Accepted Answer

Natural selection

Question 8

Which of the following is a direct result of descent with modification?

Accepted Answer

The diversity of life forms observed today

Question 9

Which equation best represents the gradual accumulation of change over time in evolutionary biology?

Accepted Answer

$$\Delta t = \sum_{i=1}^{n} \delta_i$$

Question 10

Which of the following is NOT a key insight from Darwin's observations on the Galápagos Islands?

Accepted Answer

Species are fixed and unchanging

Question 11

How did Charles Lyell's work influence Darwin's thinking?

Accepted Answer

Lyell's idea of uniformitarianism suggested that slow, gradual processes could lead to significant changes over time

Question 12

Which hierarchical system did Linnaeus develop for classifying organisms?

Accepted Answer

Binomial nomenclature

Question 13

Which of the following best explains why gradualism is important to evolutionary theory?

Accepted Answer

It shows that small changes over long periods can result in major evolutionary transformations

Question 14

A scientist discovers a fossil in a younger stratum. What does this suggest about the fossil?

Accepted Answer

It is more recent than fossils found in older strata

Question 15

Which of the following is an example of adaptation as described by Darwin?

Accepted Answer

A cactus developing thick stems to store water in a desert environment

Question 16

Which process did Cuvier propose to explain the differences in fossil layers?

Accepted Answer

Catastrophism

Question 17

Which of the following statements is most consistent with Darwin's view of life?

Accepted Answer

Species change over time through natural selection

Question 18

Which of the following best describes the role of adaptations in evolution?

Accepted Answer

Adaptations increase an organism's fitness in its environment

Question 19

Which equation would you use to model the change in allele frequency due to natural selection over generations?

Accepted Answer

$$p' = p + s(pq)$$

Question 20

Which observation from Darwin's voyage on the Beagle most strongly supported his theory of natural selection?

Accepted Answer

The unique adaptations of plants and animals to their environments
