Question 1

Which of the following best describes the concept of the 'great chain of being' as proposed by Aristotle?

Accepted Answer

A hierarchical arrangement of species based on increasing complexity and size, with humans at the top.

Question 2

According to Lamarck's theory of evolution, how do organisms acquire new traits?

Accepted Answer

By inheriting acquired characteristics that their parents developed during their lifetimes.

Question 3

Which statement best reflects Darwin and Wallace's view of how evolution occurs?

Accepted Answer

Evolution is driven by natural selection acting on variation among individuals within populations.

Question 4

What is typological thinking, as described in early evolutionary theories?

Accepted Answer

The belief that species are unchanging types and that variation within species is unimportant.

Question 5

Which of the following is a key difference between Lamarckian and Darwinian evolution?

Accepted Answer

Lamarckian evolution relies on the inheritance of acquired traits, while Darwinian evolution relies on natural selection acting on heritable variation.

Question 6

Which equation best represents the process of natural selection as described by Darwin and Wallace?

Accepted Answer

$$w = \frac{N_{offspring}}{N_{individuals}}$$

Question 7

A population of crabs is exposed to a new predator. According to Darwinian theory, what is most likely to happen over several generations?

Accepted Answer

Crabs with heritable traits that help them avoid the predator will become more common in the population.

Question 8

Which of the following claims is part of Darwin's 'descent with modification'?

Accepted Answer

Species change over time and are related by common ancestry.

Question 9

If a scientist observes that giraffes have long necks and proposes that this trait arose because giraffes stretched their necks to reach leaves and passed this trait to their offspring, which evolutionary theory is being applied?

Accepted Answer

Lamarckian evolution

Question 10

Which of the following best explains why variation is important in Darwinian evolution?

Accepted Answer

Variation provides the raw material for natural selection to act upon, leading to evolutionary change.

Question 11

Which historical figure first proposed a formal theory of evolution based on the inheritance of acquired characters?

Accepted Answer

Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck

Question 12

In the context of evolutionary theory, what does the term 'descent with modification' mean?

Accepted Answer

Modern species have evolved from ancestral species, with changes accumulating over time.

Question 13

Which of the following scenarios best illustrates natural selection?

Accepted Answer

A population of moths becomes darker over time because darker moths survive better in polluted environments.

Question 14

Which of the following is NOT a claim made by Darwin and Wallace's theory of evolution?

Accepted Answer

Species are unchanging types.

Question 15

If a population of bacteria is exposed to an antibiotic, which evolutionary process is most likely to occur according to Darwinian theory?

Accepted Answer

Bacteria with heritable resistance to the antibiotic will survive and reproduce, increasing the frequency of resistance in the population.

Question 16

Which of the following best summarizes the process component of Darwin's theory of evolution?

Accepted Answer

Individuals with heritable traits that increase reproductive success pass those traits to future generations, changing the population over time.

Question 17

Which concept did Plato and Aristotle's early theories of inheritance emphasize?

Accepted Answer

Species are perfect, unchanging types created by God.

Question 18

Which of the following evolutionary theories would predict that a blacksmith's muscular arms could be inherited by his children?

Accepted Answer

Lamarckian evolution

Question 19

Which of the following is a real-world example of natural selection?

Accepted Answer

The development of antibiotic resistance in bacteria due to the survival and reproduction of resistant individuals.

Question 20

Which of the following equations could be used to model the change in frequency of a heritable trait in a population due to natural selection?

Accepted Answer

$$\Delta p = s p (1 - p)$$
