Question 1

Which of the following best describes Darwin's concept of 'descent with modification'?

Accepted Answer

Species accumulate differences from their ancestors as they adapt to different environments over time.

Question 2

Which observation led Darwin to propose that natural selection acts on individuals within a population?

Accepted Answer

Individuals with favorable inherited traits are more likely to survive and reproduce.

Question 3

Which of the following is an example of a homologous structure?

Accepted Answer

The forelimbs of a human and the forelimbs of a whale.

Question 4

A population of beetles is drastically reduced by a flood, leaving only a few survivors. Which evolutionary mechanism is most likely to affect the genetic composition of the next generation?

Accepted Answer

Bottleneck effect

Question 5

Which formula represents the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium for allele frequencies in a population?

Accepted Answer

$$p^2 + 2pq$$ + $$q^2 = 1$

Question 6

Which of the following is NOT a source of genetic variation in a population?

Accepted Answer

Genetic drift

Question 7

Why are endemic species important evidence for evolution?

Accepted Answer

They are only found in one specific location, indicating adaptation to unique environments.

Question 8

Which evolutionary process tends to reduce genetic variation among populations over time?

Accepted Answer

Gene flow

Question 9

A scientist observes that bacteria in a hospital have become resistant to antibiotics over several years. This is an example of:

Accepted Answer

Direct observation of evolutionary change

Question 10

Which of the following best explains the difference between homologous and analogous structures?

Accepted Answer

Homologous structures share a common evolutionary origin; analogous structures have similar function but evolved independently.

Question 11

Which of the following events was crucial for the colonization of land by vertebrates?

Accepted Answer

Evolution of limbs and feet with digits

Question 12

Which group was the first to colonize land about 400 million years ago?

Accepted Answer

Arthropods

Which of the following is a correct sequence in the Linnaean hierarchy from broadest to most specific?

Accepted Answer

Domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species

Question 14

Which of the following is an example of the founder effect?

Accepted Answer

A small group of individuals colonizes a new area, resulting in different allele frequencies compared to the original population.

Question 15

Which germ layer gives rise to muscles in triploblastic animals?

Accepted Answer

Mesoderm

Question 16

Birds are able to regulate their body temperature primarily through:

Accepted Answer

Using metabolism to generate heat (endothermy)

Question 17

Which evolutionary mechanism is described by unpredictable fluctuations in allele frequencies from one generation to the next?

Accepted Answer

Genetic drift

Question 18

Which of the following is a vestigial structure?

Accepted Answer

The human appendix

Question 19

Which of the following best describes convergent evolution?

Accepted Answer

The evolution of similar features in distantly related groups due to similar environmental pressures.

Question 20

Which of the following statements about mutation rates is correct?

Accepted Answer

Mutation rates are generally low in animals and plants but high in prokaryotes.
