Question 1

Which of the following best describes Darwin's concept of 'descent with modification'?

Accepted Answer

Species accumulate differences from their ancestors as they adapt to different environments over time.

Question 2

Which observation led Darwin to propose that natural selection acts on individuals within a population?

Accepted Answer

Populations produce more offspring than the environment can support, leading to competition.

Question 3

A population of beetles experiences a sudden reduction in size due to a flood, leaving only a few survivors. Which evolutionary mechanism is most likely to affect the genetic makeup of the next generation?

Accepted Answer

Bottleneck effect

Question 4

Which of the following is an example of a homologous structure?

Accepted Answer

The flippers of a whale and the arms of a human

Question 5

Which process is responsible for reducing genetic variation between populations over time?

Accepted Answer

Gene flow

Question 6

Which formula represents the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium for allele frequencies in a population?

Accepted Answer

$$p^2 + 2pq$$ + $$q^2 = 1$

Question 7

A scientist discovers a species of bird found only on a single island and nowhere else in the world. What term best describes this species?

Accepted Answer

Endemic species

Question 8

Which of the following statements about mutations is correct?

Accepted Answer

Mutations are the ultimate source of genetic variation in populations.

Question 9

Which evolutionary process can result in the rapid increase of a beneficial allele in a population over time?

Accepted Answer

Natural selection

Question 10

Which of the following is NOT evidence for evolution?

Accepted Answer

Analogous structures with different evolutionary origins

Question 11

Which of the following best explains why the wings of birds and insects are considered analogous structures?

Accepted Answer

They evolved independently in distantly related groups due to similar environmental pressures.

Question 12

Which taxonomic rank is the most specific in the Linnaean hierarchy?

Accepted Answer

Species

Question 13

Which of the following scenarios best illustrates the founder effect?

Accepted Answer

A small group of individuals colonizes a new area, resulting in a population with different allele frequencies than the original population.

Question 14

Which germ layer gives rise to muscles in animal embryos?

Accepted Answer

Mesoderm

Question 15

Which group was the first to colonize land about 400 million years ago?

Accepted Answer

Arthropods

Question 16

Birds are able to regulate their body temperature primarily through which mechanism?

Accepted Answer

Using metabolism to generate heat (endothermy)

Question 17

Which evolutionary innovation was key to the success of insects on land?

Accepted Answer

Evolution of flight through wings that are extensions of the cuticle

Question 18

Which of the following is a direct result of natural selection?

Accepted Answer

Increase in frequency of traits that enhance survival and reproduction

Question 19

Which of the following best describes the difference between homologous and analogous structures?

Accepted Answer

Homologous structures share a common evolutionary origin; analogous structures evolved independently in different lineages.

Question 20

Which of the following is the correct order of taxonomic ranks from most inclusive to least inclusive?

Accepted Answer

Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species
